“Pleasant, cheap and easy day trip from the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2013

Highly recommended. It's a short MRT ride, easily accessible from the city, get nice view on the (probably world's cheapest) gondola ride as well as from the mountain top, good walking trail and good food. If you visit during the flowers season eg Mar for cherry blossom, you get a bonus!

Some tips:
- avoid weekend and holidays, also note the gondolas don't operate on Monday, it's the day for maintenance
- their official website provides good info, also shows any adhoc disruption of service eg due to bad weather condition.
- check weather forecast, it is cooler on the mountain
- take MRT to Taipei Zoo, follow the signage, walk 350m to the gondola station;
- consider buying the NT120 gondola package (part of current promotion), it allows 2 round trip ride + 1 stop, saves a bit of money on the already-very-cheap tickets
- you can try out the glass bottom gondola, it's a separate queue, it should not be long if it's a weekday
- you can consider taking the gondola to the last station, Maokong
- get map and direction from the Visitor's office located nearby for the following 2 items:
-- Ayishi Teapot Restaurant (for lunch/dinner/tea, this is a popular restaurant), marked as Y22 on the map, check for discount for customers with the gondola package (we forgot abt it when we were there). Signature dishes includes jasmine green tea fried rice, smoke chicken drumsticks, chicken soup, steam bun. Go to the one on street level, which is the original restaurant, not the one on the 2nd storey in the same building
-- Camphor Tree Trail, it's a easy boardwalk trail, very pleasant and relaxing. We visited during the lupin season, beautiful
- on your way down the mountain, can consider stopping at Zhinan Temple station, check out the 3 temples on the mountain, at least 2 of them are magnificient, enjoy the view from the mountain too
- you can get a refund of NT20 for the package at the customer service centre.

“Well worth the Gondola ride”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

The Gondola was good and you could get off as you pleased, unfortunately Taipei has a very bad pollution problem so you could hardly see the view over the City, this would be the problem if you went to the observatory at 101 so you might as well save NT800 and enjoy the tea houses

“Cable cars, forests, tea houses and walking, and almost in the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2013

The Gondola is about 500m from the MRT station at Taipei Zoo - well signed and easy to find. I visited early in a midweek ( one day off for tourism so you go early and go quick). Enjoyed the ride -' crystal car ' ( glass base) up as no queue and regular one down. Tbh I wouldn't bother with the crystal if you don't have kids of the 'Oooh, aaah' age as you can see the same view from the regular cabins and don't have to queue as long. Spent about an hour and a half walking at the top and ended up at the tea promotiojn centre and did the tea thing with a 'Tea-cher' ( their pun, don't blame me). Some nidce easy walks and, by the looks of the map some longer ones. Temple on the way down ( seen one seen em all) and then whisked back into central Taipei - all for under about 6 GBP including the tea.

“Definitely one of the highlights in our trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

Will definitely do this again when I'm back in Taipei.

For best experience, you can board the cabin in the late evening, watch the scenery and cities with daylight, and chill at one of the teahouse and come back down at night.
The view is fantastic, and remember to bring a jacket along, as it gets quite cold at night.
It can also gets very quiet. I could hear the people speaks in the cabin when it passes us in the opposite direction. We were blasting our music on the return trip thou :)

You can have a quiet walk down the road to some of the nearby teahouse. Be sure to try their tea-leaf fried rice, quite an unique dish.

“The gondola is worth the trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2013 via mobile

You will really get your money's worth here. Cheap and relaxing and can be paid using your MRT Easycard. Maokong is small and a bit disappointing. I was expecting to see tea growing but only saw small areas of scrappy tea bushes. The coffee and tea houses are nice. Pick something quaint with a view and enjoy the rest. It's a lovely way to relax from the Taipei hustle and bustle.
