This is far and away the best Indian restaurant in Taipei. The tandoor oven and freshly made breads are an eye-catching stand-out, but what really makes Saffron great is the depth and breadth of dishes and flavours. All the standards are there, but the menu goes well beyond that to introduce a range of flavours and spices, with particularly good non-spicy dishes to balance out the meal - both veg and meat. Try some of the cream-based curries.
Have been here a number of times over the years. Dinner for two, out with the guys. Always great. Last time was a quiet mid-week birthday.
Service is good, but because space and reservations are tight, one often gets the feeling that staff is really itching for you to free-up the table for the next party. A bit more finesse would be nice on that score.
Drawbacks: Tienmu is far and reservations can be difficult to get on late notice.

Saffron is hidden down an alley and serves up the best Indian food in Taipei. I'd put it up against any restaurant in town of any kind. Their decor is classy and understated, and they play interesting indian-inspired music. The restaurant is routinely mobbed, so reservations are a must or you may end up elsewhere. They have high chairs and plastic for smaller diners. The bar has a little of everything and they have good wines, but not a vast selection. But of course, the best part is:

THE FOOD:
Quality is a hallmark of everything they touch. The curries have an amazing complexity and depth of flavor that is astounding. This only happens with painstaking attention to detail, and they do that here. For instance, the butter chicken will hit you with some heat at first, then the burn will slowly settle in. Flavors will dance on your tongue and if you wait you will enjoy the way the flavors change. Then you have no choice but to enjoy another bite. I would say it is like tasting wine, their curries are that complex. The Vegetarian samosas have a little heat, and are slightly crispy on the outside with a savory and flavorful potato stuffing. They also have a chickpea salad that is chock full of fresh flavors. Many times when I have been to other Indian restaurants I have been disappointed in their lamb dishes, chewy, stringy-not good eats! Not so Saffron. The lamb in their dishes is high quality and definitely worth ordering. If you like nan, you will fall in love with this place. The nan is fresh baked to order in a small glassed-off kitchen in the dining area in an authentic Indian oven. It is so flavorful and smells fantastic. Don't bother getting the flavored nans at first, the original will blow you away. My wife makes fun of me for smelling the nan when it comes to the table, but really, it's that good, and pairs excellently with the curry of your choice. To be honest, I haven't really sampled the desserts, but I would be willing to try anything on the menu. As a westerner, I will say some dishes cater to Asian palates, but don't be afraid to experiment!

Having traveled to India, loving Indian food at home in San Francisco, and now living in Taipei for 5 months, we had been wanting to try Saffron. The hostess was just a touch overbearing in modifying each of our selections, but her heart was in the right place and she was very nice. The nans were top quality and the food was very authentic and tasty, though we will order different dishes on our next visit. A bit disappointing that they didn't have my favorite Flying Horse beer or even Taj Mahal - apparently difficult to import into Taiwan, but the mango lassi made up for it. Nice atmosphere and lots of diners on a Saturday night; meal was about triple what we normally pay for a meal out, but it was worth it to fill up on good Indian food. We'll be back for sure! Also noticed another Indian restaurant next door.

I have been a patron for last 5 years at this establishment! I am not a huge Indian cuisine fan but this place offers the best naan in the planet! The curries offered for both vegetarians and meat lovers are varied and delicious. It is in the pricier side but they are wirth every penny, I say!
