“Very nice hotel”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Location is in the center, but in business district with many banks and companies, so area gets very quiet at nights. That´s no problem because metro goes nearby, 5 min. walking from the hotel. Staff was very nice and helpful, 10+. Some spoke better English than others, but everybody tried. They arranged for us extra night and we did not have to change the room, even though the hotel was fully booked. They also called immediately to the tour operator when we wanted to book a sightseeing tour (it did not worked out because of the schedules did not match, but they were very helpful). There were a construction site front of the hotel in the street, and that´s why taxis could not stop directly front of the hotel. When I was leaving, one of the staff members waived me a taxi from the street and carried my heavy luggage and told the driver my destination address in Chinese. I was very pleased for the service. Breakfast in the hotel was very Asian style, but it was ok. Specially the orange juice was very good. Hotel, room and bathroom was very clean and cleaning every day was very good with new towels and toiletries every day. Bathroom did not steamed entirely during the shower, which is nice and exceptional. Room was a bit on the small size compared to rooms in America but just normal for the rest of the world. Because our room was without window it was very quite to sleep. There was also laundry machine upstairs for guests to use and it was very handful (although more English directions how to use it would be nice). There was also a fitness center, but I did not use it. If I have to say something negative, it is that the air - con was not so good (in room, bathroom was ok) and its especially important when the room had no window. And the toilet seat was so funny (heated). I was pleased my stay and I would go there again.

A lovely new hotel. Rooms are small by western standards but they are fresh, clean and comfortable. Love the Japanese toilet. Very accessable by MRT. Easy to see Taiwan from here. Staff are very helpful.

Location of the hotel is on a large busy street but not really convenient to any tourist sites. Reception is one flight up. The name of the hotel is confusing. It translates to something like “Shinjuku dancing clothes” in Japanese and makes absolutely no sense in Chinese-even though it’s in Taiwan and not Japan. It is does not translate to “Mai” in English.

The hotel seems to rely heavily on Japanese guests, and staff could communicate better in Japanese than English. Demeanor of staff was professional but stiff and reserved in the sort of way that may be the norm in Japan but is quite out of place and uncomfortable for Taiwan.

Breakfast was at an adjoining café. Choices were sparse but adequate. The proprietor seemed overly nervous running around clearing plates and glasses and generally making everyone on edge.

We booked a twin room that turned out not to have a window, even though this was not advertised. There was a false curtain on the wall that was deceptive if looking at a photo of the room before booking.

Room was small, dimly lit and somewhat musty, despite the hotel being open for less than a year. There was a shower but no tub. Everything was clean but we had serious issues with the room being freezing cold as it was the coldest winter in 30 years in Taiwan.

There is a temperature control unit that allows guests to directly set the temperature. We had issues getting it to go above freezing and mentioned this to staff several times. Each time someone would come and press several buttons and say it was all fixed- only it never was. We mentioned the coldness issue to housekeeping and we were promised that they would set it up for us when they cleaned. Still not fixed.

It was only at check-out that we learned that the “heating/air-conditioning” system wasn’t air conditioning/heating at all, but an external ventilation system that had to be kept on as there were no windows. Basically, this ventilation system keeps the room the same temperature as it is outside. We should have mentioned we were cold so they could have sent up a portable heater, they said. Unbelievable.

There is no way I would ever return to or recommend this hotel to anyone.

Surprise, surprise, there is only one review for this hotel here, that too in Japanese. That itself may generate some disquiet in the likely visitor's mind. And it did in my case too.

But what a turnabout I experienced when I actually experienced the hotel. Of course the low visibility of the establishment was not without a reason. I soon learnt that the hotel leaned heavily on Japanese tourists. The Japanese language brochures and maps in the lobby, and the Japanese style toilet only corroborated the fact of strong Japanese patronage. The Japanese style commode is not inconvenient for others, rather it is more comfortable with the warm seat and various adjustable water flows and bidet. The toilet is immaculate with glass window with a view, a glass door separating the shower section. The room size was not quite big, but in tune with the size we mostly found in other Taiwanese hotels of this range.

On the tenth floor there is a water cooler, gym and a nice terrace to enjoy the open sky. The hotel provides free use of cloth washing machine too.

One amusing thing about the Mai Hotel is that the reception desk is on the 2nd floor while the entrance and the dining is on the first floor. The entrance to the hotel and its lift looks like and may be mistaken for any other shop in the stretch, unless you are mindful of the small purple signage overhead. I walked ahead of the hotel several times by mistake.

The room has free wi-fi and all other mod cons. The breakfast buffet is fine but the spread not quite generous. The place also caters to non-guest patrons as a coffee shop. Mai Hotel sits between two MRT stations namely Nanjing East Road and Songjiang Nanjing. Although the former one sounds more logical because of the same address as the hotel, Songjiang Nanjing MRT is closer to the hotel only 3 min's walk from the Exit 7 near Bank of Bangkok.

There are many convenience stores like 7 Eleven and Family Mart, many banks and ATMs near the hotel. On the other side of the road facing the hotel is Taiwan's popular coffee outlet Mr Brown.

The front desk staff is eager and enthusiastic to fulfill your requests and queries. I was given a breakfast pack and coffee even though I checked out at 4.00 AM. The front staff accompanied me upto the end of the block to hail a taxi for me. That's called great customer service.

Room Tip: Choose higher floor facing city, the full wall window will provide good view.
