“Monumental building but poor facilities”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

The first impression is in line with the hotel's grand name: the building is huge and monumental, and its tall atrium is undoubtedly impressive. Certainly looks like a 5-star outfit. However, it was wifi only in certain rooms and the toilet lightnings weren't working properly when we checked in. The power sockets were old and much eroded or semi-broken, and not all of them worked. The light/power switches were strangely designed, and it took us a while to figure out to switch off the lights at night without turning off the power to our charging mobiles. The hotel needs to do more work before it can call itself anything more than 3-star.

Excellent location! The airport bus stop is just right in front. Lots of nice restaurants and shops. And the subway station is only about 5 minutes walk away.

The room I stayed was newly renovated, but no "paint" smell at all. Very comfy bed and pillows!

Check in was very quick and easy. The room was spacy and very clean.

Recommend for all types of travelers. Even suitable for families, because there is a mall next door with food court, shops, and Toy R Us!

The hotel itself has the possibility of being a 5 star property one day and their service staff are very friendly and helpful when checking in, but the rooms require rennovation (Which they are doing).

I booked the hotel through priceline and paid over US$100/night but the interior of the room felt like a cheap motel. When I called in for extra towels, they asked that I return them to the lobby upon checkout which is not proper for a good quality hotel. Soaps and conditioners are cheap.

Most disappointing was that the staff would not let my wife and I move to a room with heating or with a queen bedroom. The room was cold for the 3 days and nights we stayed. THey cited full occupancy, but the hotel didn't look very full.

Note to management: the elevators on 7th floor are controlled by call button in three seperate locations - unclear why your hotel lacks a single button for all the elevators.

I guess you get what you pay for, although I don't think this hotel should be listed at anything north of $80/night, and priceline should not be listing this as a 4 star hotel until renovations are done.

Room Tip: ask for a room with heating

Having read the reviews at Tripadvisor, my expectation of this hotel is not high.

However, I had a surprise when I arrived. It may look dated on the outside, but the interior is impressive. I stayed in a deluxe room at 8th storey and it looked absolutely new and stylish. Perhaps it had been renovated recently? The room reminded me of my stay at Conrad Singapore.

Top class!

Room Tip: Choose a deluxe room on 8th Storey!

The property is visually aged and is having renovation currently. Despite that, renovation seems to have a relatively small impact on the other guests experience. As this hotel was assigned by a tour group, it has numerous drawbacks in which the hotel lacks compared to other more budget orientated options, and such as free wifi. Moreover, the hotel lobby is badly maintained as the floor is full of smudges, and which is un aesthetically pleasing towards the hotel main group of customers, and which are mainly Chinese nationals and business men.

It is to be warned that behaviour of both staff and guests could be downright abhorrent at times. Spit in the elevator? A big no-no in my code of conduct. So goes loud talking by reception staff, whom have a language barrier.

The staff has also failed our request for adjacent rooms with connecting doors, and hence displaced my family apart, despite repeated requests to do so.

The hotel location is in a business district and hence is not recommended for anything but business purposes. The rooms are on par with other three to three-and-a-half-star hotels in taipei. Furnishings are relatively dated, if not chipped.

I would recommend hotels in ximending instead for all non-corporate purposes. My review is a solely individualistic opinion on the property.

Room Tip: Choose rooms that are in the atrium which are more peaceful and tranquil.

I've stayed at this hotel numerous times. They are currently undergoing renovation. This is definitely much needed. I stayed at the executive floor and I had a great stay. Service was exceptional. Food can have some improvement. This hotel has lots of history and having changes owners has made this hotel into a 5 star level hotel. The renovations will help it become a fantastic hotel.

Pros:

- the rooms are large and comfortable. So's the bathroom.
- breakfast choices are varied and considered good for a hotel of its size
- the concierge is the highlight - they are super-friendly and super-helpful.

Cons:
- the Sunworld Dynasty looks like a relic of the 80s, and it basically is. The whole building looks tired, but at least they are advertising their new renovation in 2013 - it's sorely need.
- the wifi is not free and is super-expensive.
- the location is rather lackluster - not a lot of restaurant options and a bit far from the main nightlife.

Overall it wasn't a bad stay, but for the price there are other options in Taipei.
