“Grand but worn out”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

If you like peeling paint, worn out carpets, peeling wallpaper, and a room with no window...go immediately to the Grand. As an extra you can also try out hard mattresses. The vast property is wonderful with a history of 60 years but it is grossly under maintained.

Room Tip: You cannot get the standard windowless rom.

We stayed in one of their standard rooms, $120 cad per night. It was small, run down and no window but it was clean. After traveling for 20 hours I was looking forward to a shower and some sleep. We were woken up several during the night. Walls are paper thin. We could hear people talking and walking in the hall way as if they were in the same room, it was like trying to sleep in a transit station. Early in the morning we were in for treat as we heard our next door neighbor cough up a lung. Our stay here ranks at the top of my list for bad hotel experiences. Maybe getting a different room other then a standard would have been better... But at double the price or more it wasn't worth the gamble.

Stayed at the grand hotel in mid november 2012. Beautiful hotel and lives up to its name as you enter the lobby. Its a tourist attraction so theres hustle and bustle constantly. Its pricey even for the standard room with no window and a rather firm to hard mattress so i would suggest an upgrade. The toilets are a mixture of modern fittings with old plumbing. The rooms are old and could do with some fine tuning. internet at the lobby is free and good but in your room is quite expensive but reliable. The hotel is far from the main city but there are shuttle busses to the nearby train station. Food at the hotel is great! Try their dumplings. Its a nice stay at the hotel if your trip is paid for but probably better for a visit if not. there are some nice affordable hotels downtown.

Though my visit to the hotel was a short one for about 5-6 hours but the stay was filled with moments that won't be complete without the spell bounding surroundings and the hospitality of the hotel and the cherry on the top being the world cuisine offered on the buffet.
This was the 1st place of attraction in the city before Taipei 101 was built and still frolics our senses.
My say..THUMBS UP! :)

The hotel looks amazing and is a real tourist attraction. The lobby is magnificent however it is a bit dated inside with the rooms in need of refurbishment. Rooms on the inside of the hotel are dark with no wi does and that is a bit depressing.
The wifi is expensive and a cup of coffee is about €7.

However the breakfast buffet is excellent and it is amazing to stay in such a historic building.

Room Tip: A room with a view is advised!

Very well maintained and great service throughout. Beautifel view from our suite. It really is like stepping back in time just as another poster mentioned without looking "old".
The only thing I did not like was the 5 minute walk to the pool. I actually got lost trying to find it!

We stayed here for 2 nights and enjoyed the surreal Grand Hotel stay. The building is vast, and the lobby and communal areas look like a Chinese palace, it's a rare opportunity to stay in a place like this. We knew the rooms would not be modern, but that was part of the charm, it was like stepping back in time. The room was huge, and was clean and comfortable enough for our stay, but wasn't luxurious. Its a 5 minute taxi ride to Shilin night market, and not far from the centre when using the MRT. It's worth booking the limousine from the hotel in advance to pick you up from the airport, costs 15000 dollars for hotel car, 12000 for taxi so it's worth the extra to have the convenience of having the car ready and waiting. I would recommend this hotel if you want to stay in an iconic building and experience the culture and charm of this wonderful building.
