“Very good if you're staying put in the hotel and not going anywhere.”
Reviewed April 28, 2012

I went on a leisure trip to Taipei in Feb 2012.

The hotel room was nice and big and comfortable. The staff were very polite and pleasant. There was a very wide selection of food at breakfast.

The heated outdoor swimming pool at the top floor had a very good view of the city. You get a view of Taipei 101 from here too!

But the hotel is quite a distance from the nearest subway station. And the station Liuzhangli is not on the same subway line as the touristy places. And the interchange stations can involve long walks within the station.

I would definitely stay here again if I am looking to stay put in the hotel. But if I am looking to do a lot of sightseeing in the city, I would probably look for another hotel.

I am frequent traveller mostly for both business and pleasure, and I feel at home at Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel. I stayed for a week on business to attend a conference.
I usually travel to Hilton, Intercontinental or Novotel. This was the first time in a Shangri-La's hotel and hope not the last one!

The hotel feels special the moment you get off the taxi. Almost nothing is like other chain hotel. The staff is welcoming and very helpful, they take care of your luggage and guide you to the reception. The decor is so refreshing and nice relative to most of the large chain hotels, and they really pay attention to every detail.

At front desk the staff is again excellent and different than any other large chain hotel. Check in was very fast and the employee escorted me to the elevators and give quick overview of the hotel services!

The concierge is very friendly and helpful. He arranges everything and gives excellent recommendations to restaurants etc.

The room was clean, the bed was amazing, and there was plenty of space to spread out. Bathroom outstanding including amenities. The cleaning staff does a superb job. Bottled water is free of charge as long as one does not wish Evian. Note that fresh fruit is provided every day free of charge in the room. It's the first time I got fresh fruit.

The hotel is connected to the Far Eastern Plaza which has food court and supermarket in the basement but the hotel's buffet is actually great.

The breakfast buffet in this hotel is excellent and offers an awesome breakfast with a wide amount of selections. Without a shadow of a doubt the best I ever got. I really enjoy the juices, and the tea selection too. The juices are fresh (not concentrate!) and made according to your own wish if you ask of it. Fresh orange juice, fresh watermelon juice, apple juice, carrot juice, tomato an interesting cucumber and cellery juice. I personally asked of pineapple and watermelon juice.
I also had a dinner at the restaurant at the 39th floor which again provides with excellent food and service.

In short, I had a wonderful stay. Thank you, Shangri-La's for being a different chain hotel and take of your outstanding staff who make the difference. If I travel again to Taipei this is certainly the hotel. I wouldn't consider anyplace else.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view of Taipei 101 when you check in. I did not know but one of my colleagues go...

I have stayed here twice on business trip. Rooms are spAcious and clean. Beds are very comfortable. Housekeeping lady left a note everyday to say good day. Service is top notch. I order food in the room many times. Iam vegetarian, and they try to customize whatever they can. I got a call after the meals asking how it was. Concierge is quite helpful as well. Overall great hotel!

checked into shangri-la's far eastern plaza hotel for a 5 nights stay and was happy to be given a free upgrade by the receptionist as a welcome to taipei gift. Was happy to find the room nicely furnished.

During our stay, the concierge team have been really helpful helping us source for places worth visiting. In addition, when we were hungry at 1am in the morning and were craving for McDonalds, the concierge team even offered to help us call for McDonald's delivery!

On one of the days, my friend fell sick and she was sent to the hospital. The duty manager on duty arranged for one of their guest relations officers to accompany us to the hotel as we were quite foreign to the hospital in taiwan.

The breakfast buffet offered a variety of choices and it was amazing!

I am deeply amazed by their efficiency and immaculate precision of their service! i couldn't any more amazed with their graciousness. It was definitely a 5 star hotel.

Staff were very polite and saw that our every need was met. We stayed for three nights. We found the gym to be modern and clean. The rooftop pool was a bit more tired-looking but you get some spectacular views of 101 from the rooftop. The rooms themselves did not appear ultra-modern but were clean. Bathrooms were large. Room TV was a little small but we did not spend much time in the room anyway.

I have to say average for this category, there are too many slips in different places for the hotel to earn a higher rating. The check-in may be done by less than interested front desk staff, but once passing that things pick up. Some rooms have a great view of Tiapei 101 so ask for that when you check in.

The Filipino bellhops are great, fast with your luggage and fast to hail down a taxi.

The pool on the hotel roof, something like 80 stories in the air cannot be beat. The side areas are covered and there are glass walls keeping you in and the wind out. The gym is state of the art as well.

As for the rooms, the bathrooms are probably the highlight- quite nice. The standard or deluxe rooms as they call them are small and oddly shaped. Carpets needing replacing starting 5 years ago.

Next door is Far Eastern Plaza which has food court and supermarket in the basement but the hotel's buffet is very good. It is one of the better ones

I was in Taipei for business and had the pleasure of staying at the Shangri-la Far Eastern. This hotel is about service. Everyone is extremely friendly, with a tea greeting upon check-in, fresh fruit decorated with orchid flowers waiting for you in your room, and to-go cookies at checkout. The staff went out of their way to get to know me, without being intrusive, even during my short. The rooms are nice, but not brand new or overly pretentious. Think of them in the same caliber as a J.W. Mariott, but not best in class in Asia. I would argue that more time and effort went into the appearance of the lobbies, restaurant, elevators and floor walkways. Updated rooms would garner this hotel 5 stars. Getting to the 101 is easy, and it is in the right part of town to where virtually everything is short walk or cab ride away. Taipei was the crowning stop of my Asia visit, with the Shangri-la Far Eastern being a perfect reflection of the kindness and thoughtfulness of the Taiwanese people.
