“Below SPG Sheraton standard”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

I stayed in this hotel twice in the past 3 years for the reason of its location. I used to stay in this hotel more frequent in the 90s. As a SPG gold member I expect certain things from a Category 5 hotel and this hotel did not deliver.

The room is renovated on the surface, i.e., bedding, lighting, paint, cabinets, TV etc were to the current modern standard, but the window, the ceiling height, the bathroom layout etc were the same. After stayed many other SPG category 5 hotels this one will not make it to my list.

The service is not as good as years before. Hotel staffs in the 80s/90s were more attentive then the young team now. Honestly, other than location I think this is a very average hotel and not worth the money we paid.

Stayed four nights; service is fantastic in every aspect definitely speaking volumes of the Taiwanese. From front desk, bell boy, housekeeping to reastaurant wait staff. Only issue I had was that the shower drainage didnt drain fast enough causing ponding each time i showered but other than that, high quality room, lots of bottled water given freely. Hotel is 5 minutes away from Shantao Temple Mrt very conveninently located.

Conclusion: Outperformed my expectation. Renovation is nicely done. I would stay again. Service is very good. Had some issues with noise outside seeping into the room and the duty manager came right up and switched me another room

This stay: 2 nights on a personal trip. Wanted something closer to the older part of the town to see the Taipei urban renenwal projects. Thought about whether to stay at w or Le meridian on the east side but wanted somewhere closer thus Sheraton. Hotel itself is big, 600 plus rooms. Checked in with very friendly front desk and on to the room. Got upgraded to suite. At night no issues but next day the bus noise was rattling my window. Asked to change room and they swiftly did so. Unfortunately the other suite also had same issues. I concluded lies with the vey noisy Taipei buses. Nothing more can be done (except to double window but a large renovation already took place so....). Club lounge breakfast spread was decent. Not great. Standard Sheraton.

Pros: location close to west side and central Taipei. Clean renovation. Friendly staff

Considerations: noise levels during the day (see above)

No comment: spa, massage, swimming pool

About me: East Asian male. Based in Hong Kong. Travels for business and pleasure 100 to 150 nights a year (mostly Asia). SPG platinum 75.

Still known to locals by its old name "Lai Lai", the hotel recently changed its name from Sheraton to Sheraton Grande. It is located directly above the Shandao Temple subway station. I usually stay at this hotel when I have to take a train to other cities in Taiwan (especially Taichung, Tainan, and those located along the HSR trackway) because the hotel is only one subway station away from Taipei Train Station.

This is the old part of Taipei (western region). The new bussling part of town is now the eastern district of Taipei. But I enjoy the old city charm around the Sheraton Grande - Linshen North Road (entertainment street of Taipei), Presidential Palace are all within walking distance.

The hotel is huge and always crowded. That's the bit that I dislike.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the western block. It has fewer rooms and is therefore a lot quieter.

I would highly recommend staying at the Sheraton. It is a bit pricey. However, you are down the street from the Shandao Station MRT which can take you anywhere in the city. It is very safe, clean and the staff is extremely attentive. You are within walking distance to the Chang Kai Shek Memorial which I would highly recommend visiting. A running/walking track is just a few blocks away. The Shandao Temple garden is located in the same area with beautiful wild lotus flower. When leaving on excursions remember to take the name of the hotel written in Mandarin. Although most cabs speak some English, it is best to have a written back up.

On the plus side the rooms are well organized and have new features and design. The executive lounge is well equipped, modern and has great food.
Negatives - fresh air in the rooms is hard to come by... stuffy is an understatement. I found it difficult to get comfortable. I also found the gym brutally small and extremely poor air handling given the number of rooms and focus on catering to the traveler (sometimes a gym can be that 3 am refuge when you can't sleep). Also there was a long line at check-in and the SPG Gold/Platinum sign in front of one of the desks had no one in attendance. There was no priority given to frequent stayers.
Given the prices and brand prestige I would expect more.

Dear Buddy1625,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. It is regrettable that your stay did not meet your expectations. The main purpose of online reviews is to highlight areas of improvement so that we can make proper adjustments in our services and facilities in the future.

Your feedback regarding the air quality in the guest room and fitness center will be shared with management team for extensive review. About the congested fitness area, we will be undergoing expansion and equipment upgrade later this month to provide our guests a better, more spacious place to workout. We hope that you will be able to utilize the new workout area when you visit again in the future.

Thank you for raising the issues regarding SPG front desk and frequent stayer benefits, we would like to be able to correct this immediately. Please contact us at sheratongrande.taipei@sheraton.com so we can further investigate and prevent similar events from occurring.

Should you have any further comments or questions, please feel free to email us.

Warm regards,

Great hotel, modern, fresh and immaculately clean. The rooms are spacious and have decent in room internet (cable and wifi). Each room has its own wifi hotspot. The breakfast buffet was huge and pretty much every cuisine is catered for and its all fresh and inviting. The staff and facilities are excellent and the out front staff are very efficient at getting you taxis and telling the driver (in Chinese) where you need to go. The hotel is located right by a metro station which is superb if you need to travel around Taipei in rush hour.
