Probably the best view you can get of Taipei and Taipei 101, the hike is really quick and easy and hardly tiring. Easily walk-able from Taipei 101. I would try to avoid going at weekends though as it can get pretty crowded, also around sunset time it can be pretty crowded too.

A green forest mountain trail (象山親山步道) above the roofs of Taipei. If you want to escape he big city and breath some nature, you can come here. There is also an excellent view on the 101 skyscraper and the skyline at night is spectacular. The best thin about is that after opening of the new MRT Xin-Yi line, it's so easy to get there.

Here are the directions:
Take the MRT Xin-Yi line direction XianShan (象山), get out at the terminal station Xiang Shan (象山). Take the Exit 2. You will come out in front of the Zhong Qiang Park (中強公園). Walk straight through the park (about 5 Minutes) until its end. You will see another small park in front (San li Park), but you turn left and go up the road to the mountain. After 50 meters You will see a very big office building, Golden Global Plaza. Here are road signs to the Mountain Trail, which tell you to go right. Thats the official path which is very tiring with a lot of boring stairs. Instead of going right, just go straight further up and after 10 to 20m you will see a small path going up the mountain (its directly next to the "The Jade" Appartment building. Just follow this small path, climb the few hundred stairs and you will come to a budhist temple. At the budhis temple again just follow the small path to the right, which lead you to a few more stairs and you will come to the obversation Pagoda, where the small path meets the big path. Here you can see a map with a choice of various mountain trails. On the way back, just follow the big path.

This is a hike that can be extended from the Elephant Mountain to three other mountains. It is quite a climb up to the Elephant Mountain, as there are -a lot- of stairs, but it should be fine for people in normal shape.
If you enjoy hiking, I would recommend going further, as it continues with stairs, some walking in the forest.

One of the best spots to watch the sunset ! The distance up is relatively small, but be aware that it is quite steep. Go there late afternoon just before the sunset. It provides not only a stunning view but also the difference of Taipei by day and night.
