Long overdue review. Was in Taipei alone for a week in Dec 2013. I was so glad I booked Star Hostel and not anywhere else. It's the ideal place for any solo traveller who's there to chill but doesn't wanna be left in complete solitude.

Firstly, the location was central. 5-minute walk away from Taipei MRT, Taipei Railway Station, Taipei Bus Interchange and Taipei High Speed Rail. You have ALL the necessary modes of transport that will get you to the different parts of the city AND the country. No fear of not being able to find your way back at night as long as you find one of the huge landmarks-Taipei Interchange/Railway, you will be able to orientate yourself and get back safely. There's also a direct bus that gets you from/to the airport. And if you're looking for a short hike, direct bus from Taipei Railway brings you to YangMingShan. Taipei MRT is also the interchange station for 2(or 3?) of the more commonly used lines that will bring you to ZhongXiaoFuXing and Ximending. If all that's not good enough for you, it's really easy to hail a cab/taxi right downstairs. U-bikes are also available for rent near Taipei MRT and you can drop off the bicycles at other stations around the city.

Star Hostel is a 2-minute walk away from Spot Taipei, the arts film cinema surrounded by lovely cafes and Japanese restaurants. If you're ready to walk a little before 12 midnight, take a slow 20-minute stroll to NingXia Night Market (宁夏夜市)for awesome braised pork rice (Lu Rou Fan 鲁肉饭). Need urgent supplies or supper after midnight? A few 7-elevens and 24 hr marts just 3-5 mins walk away.

Coin operated laundry machines and dryers. Open air balcony with racks and hangers to hang your clothes. Definitely needed if you're going to be there for more than a week.

The reception and common lounge is in the building with shared dorms while my private room was in another building. If you feel like having a chat, just pop over next door. The 2 buildings also 'meet' on the roof top balcony where there's plenty of space for supper and journal writing if you wish to keep an eye on the washing machines beside you.

My private room had ample space for me to lay out my shopping on the floor while I watched TV. Even had a table and chair for my small items and daily go-out bag. Private shower with curtain and a hairdryer. Nothing fancy but really a luxury for a backpacker. Has all the necessities a traveller needs.
And yes, daily room-cleaning services too.

Security is not an issue. Just don't lose your transponder that gives you access to the building (a round token that works somewhat like hotel security cards) and your room key.

I met a few Star Hostel staff members, all of them were friendly and thoughtful. They were eager to find out what you wanted from your stay in the city and they were happy to help you print out maps, numbers etc. All that helpfulness and sincerity with no tip required.

If you intend to have Taipei as a base, they will be able to store your luggage till you're back from your tour and ready to lug everything direct to the airport.

Definitely will be back the next time I visit Taipei. ❤

Quite enjoyed by stay at Star Hostel, it has a great location which is about 10 minutes walk from Taipei Main MRT station (red and blue line) and 2-3 minutes walk from Zhongshan MRT Station (red line).

Staff were extremely accommodating, friendly, and they can speak English fairly well for us to understand. They're well knowledgeable in the area too and can recommend places for you to go.

Rooms include free breakfast from 0800-1100, just bread, fruit, tea and coffee. Beds are really clean and the sheets are as white as ever. However, you pay for what you get and the rooms are quite small. I booked a double deckered bed and had a bit of difficulty moving around.

Don't bring heavy luggage as the lounge to check in/check out/have breakfast is on the second floor. No elevators, just stairs which can be quite dangerous if you can't carry your heavy things well. If you're lucky, you'll get the 2nd/3rd floor but there are chances that you may be given a room on the 4th/5th floor. Bathrooms and toilets were really clean as there is someone coming in everyday around late morning to noon to clean the area. They have a hairdryer as well and toilet paper is well stocked.

Room Tip: Try to request the 2nd/3rd floor for your rooms, makes your life a lot more easier.

I really enjoyed my stay at Star Hostel. Great location (about 5 minutes away from the nearest train station), friendly and accommodating staff (one of them even helped us look for a place to get drinks), and clean rooms. Their room rates include breakfast (toast, fruit, and coffee/tea) as well. Will definitely go back :)

TIP: Don't bring heavy luggage, since there are no elevators, chances are you'll be carrying them for two or three flights of stairs.

The staff speaks good English and is very helpful. Good knowledge of the city. We just don't like the fact that you have to climb stairs because it is a hassle when you have a lot of luggage. Location of hotel is very good, right outside the bus stop

Travelled to Taiwan, Taipei from 17 - 19 Oct 2013.

The room I had was not meant for 3 people but for 2 people. I was told that they had added one more bed upon my request since they ran out of beds for 3 people. The room was an oblong shape upon entry and the beds were arranged in a way which made walking around the room difficult.

They placed a table just outside the bathroom, next to the toilet. I was a little puzzled.

When I left the room to communicate with the staff further on other issues, my sister re-arranged the furniture. However, this time, the TV and fridge had to be put in a corner such that the wires were too short to connect to the switches. My sister was peeved after knowing there were no longer wires available and felt that we paid for things we could not make use of. Made no sense. Well, I was more than happy to switch off the TV because I really found it very noisy throughout the trip. Apparently, it was switched on but nobody was watching it!

We had a bathroom which was the best bathroom we had. No bathtubs to jump in and out. No dirty shower curtains. A mid-length mirror inside which everyone could see himself in the mirror at different corners of the bedroom!

The pillow was also too soft. I was sleeping on the bed as if there was no pillow. Yes, it was that soft.

There was also a dehumidifier in the room which was working. I like the dehumidifier best.

All in all, it was a cozy and comfortable room.

The hostel was located in a strategic place! It was located at about 5 minutes' walk away from Zhongzheng Metro Station in Zhongzheng District in Taipei and Zhongzheng Metro Station was one stop away from Taipei Metro Station.

The hostel was surrounded by boutiques and interest shops so I figured we were in a shopping district for the middle income groups. It was also surrounded by restaurants instead of lower-end eateries.

On exploration, you could find convenience stores within 10 minutes' walk.

The staff were young, vibrant, warm and friendly. They would gladly chat with you to provide any tour information you required.

There were a lot of Taipei maps, which were not available as brochures, on their walls. I was told they made the maps themselves. It would be good to take a look at the walls on Level 2 of No. 132 building where the reception was before you moved on for the day.

The only map available was an enlarged map of the sub-district this hostel was located and a neighbouring sub-district. I am impressed!

You had to pay a deposit of NTD 300 for their room key which would be refunded on the day you checked out.

The stairways were designed such that there were little hand grips. It was really a hostel meant for youngsters.

Stayed in the female dorm for 4 nights - room was well maintained, albeit a little small (i think there is a larger dorm room though). Staffs were friendly and service was good! Excellent location - easily accessible from Zhong Shan & Taipei Subway Stations (both within walking distance); very central.

Oh, and I loved the steamed dumplings served in the alley near the dorm; 福大蒸餃, be sure to visit! :)

We stayed in a private room (private bathroom) for two nights. The staff was very welcoming and nice! Our room was large for hostel standards, and bathroom was clean and looked new!
The best thing about this hostel was the breakfast, this was the only place during our Asia trip where they served whole wheat bread and four types of fresh fruit! (grapefruit, peaches, guava and tasty apples!). They also had great art hanging on the walls!
Location is close to Taipei Main station, and it is in a lovely part of town. Shops are all around.
Would definately stay here again if I visit Taipei.
