I love everything there is to this hostel:

(1) the beds were nice and comfortable
(2) the living room was very relaxing (they even play very good soothing music)
(3) the internet was fast and reliable
(4) the brekkie was decent
(5) the staff were very much helpful
(6) the whole place is very clean
(7) and the location was just less than 10mins walk from the Taipei main station

It is true that most of the furnitures here are straight out of an IKEA store but this somehow give the hostel its uniqueness. I love this place because of this - it gives it a distinct characteristic and warmth.

I would definitely go back here again and I will without a doubt recommend this to my friends.

This is my 2nd stay in Star Hostel. I must say this time round it wasn't as good as the last time mainly due to the state of the rooms.
Rooms: We were given the "newer" rooms, located in the same block but neighbouring stairwell. Although they were supposed to be newer, somehow the state of the rooms seemed quite tired and old compared to the main stairwell (where the reception is located) I previously stayed in.
Our stay was split into 1 night & another 3 nights. The room given to us (Room 21) on the first night was not very pleasant. It had a musty smell. The toilet was small, damp and some areas had mildew/mold. When we gave feedback, they were polite and said that there were no other rooms available but upon our return stay we could take a look at the room first prior to check-in. When we came back for another 3 nights' stay, we reminded the reception that we would like to take a look at the room allocated first. One of them had a non-chalant attitude and said that we could do that but there were no other rooms available. Another lady was polite enough to inform us that the room allocated had a view and we might like it. Room 45 (still located the "newer" stairwell) indeed was much better. It had windows over-looking the main street, toilet was bigger and didn't have a musty smell. I guess I still preferred my stay previously at the old block. As usual, the stairs can be a pain especially at the end one's trip due to the overbulging luggages! (NB: The rooms chosen were ensuite.)

Service: Other than the one occasion when we got a non-chalant response, all other times were polite, friendly, informative & prompt.

Location: It is very convenient as Zhongshan MRT is just nearby. Shinkong Mitsukoshi, Daiso, Watsons, bank, 7-11 all within walking distance. You can even walk to Taipei Main Station.

Food nearby: The nearest night market is Ningxia, which is still considerably far away about 20 min walk. But sells very good food! There is a dumpling store sells quite delicious dumplings & zha jiang mian. Also, a soya bean eatery which sells good soya bean drink and even better (cheaper than ding tai fung!) xiao long bao. Local market round the corner for fruits. Small stall beside 7-11 for local breakfast such as 蛋饼.

Overall: For the price paid, I must say it's still very much value for money.

The hostel is located on the second storey, so if you have a heavy luggage be prepared to carry it up all the way to your room, depending on which storey you are assigned to.

Staff were really helpful and friendly, always willing to offer advice on what to do in taiwan, and also interact with guests.

Loved the communal living area, really chill and relax after a day out.

Locks are provided for the lockers if you are staying in dorm room :) (i stayed in single ensuite, single and 4 pax mixed dorm)

The area is easily accessible by train, lots of small eateries and cafes located around. Will definitely stay here again on my next trip to taipei :)

Thank you Star Hostel!

Very clean hostel with new bathrooms and a shared communal lounge. Breakfast is do it yourself toast and tea/coffee with some fruit. Free Wifi. Nice helpful staff. As with all hostels there is little soundproofing between rooms so if you get one selfish guest who decides to talk at the top of their voice at 2.30am there is little you can do (however this is not the hostels fault). Great location and not far from the MRT. Great shopping just around the corner. Great for singles and couples, but not families as stairs are open and not suitable for small kids.

Another reviewer said that this place feels like home. And I can't agree more. I stayed at Taipei Backpackers' Hostel in Ximending in 2010, and that wasn't too bad. But in comparison, Star Hostel is definitely much better. We booked a room for 4 on the second level. For one the rooms are brighter and cleaner. The shared bathrooms are really clean. Staff are really friendly too. The hostel is also located near Zhongshan MRT station (~5 min including climbing stairs), and around 10min walk to Taipei Main Station

In Star Hostel:
Transport - easy reachable by bus, cab, Taipei Main Station 台北车站 (15min walk), Zhong Shan MRT 中山捷运站 (5min walk). I will suggest you to walk from Zhong Shan Mrt cause nearer. If you want to go Tao Yuan Airport 桃园机场 simply go Taipei main station and purchase a ticket for Kuo Kuang Bus 国光客运 with only NTD125.

Security - Safe, all main entrance doors are equipped with security system whereby you only can access by room key.

Environment - Modern design with clean rooms and clean toilets. Feel free to meet new friends from all over the world under one roof.

Facilities - Shoe rack, fridge, kitchen where you can cook (plates, cup etc are ready), washing machine (balcony to hang your clothes with hanger ready), computer set, Wifi service, lots of books, hair dryer, comb, towel for rent.

Service - Superbly good, provide all the info you want, guide you to your room, breakfast ready, very friendly.

Room Rates - Affordable price that worth to stay!
