This is my 2nd stay in Star Hostel. I must say this time round it wasn't as good as the last time mainly due to the state of the rooms.
Rooms: We were given the "newer" rooms, located in the same block but neighbouring stairwell. Although they were supposed to be newer, somehow the state of the rooms seemed quite tired and old compared to the main stairwell (where the reception is located) I previously stayed in.
Our stay was split into 1 night & another 3 nights. The room given to us (Room 21) on the first night was not very pleasant. It had a musty smell. The toilet was small, damp and some areas had mildew/mold. When we gave feedback, they were polite and said that there were no other rooms available but upon our return stay we could take a look at the room first prior to check-in. When we came back for another 3 nights' stay, we reminded the reception that we would like to take a look at the room allocated first. One of them had a non-chalant attitude and said that we could do that but there were no other rooms available. Another lady was polite enough to inform us that the room allocated had a view and we might like it. Room 45 (still located the "newer" stairwell) indeed was much better. It had windows over-looking the main street, toilet was bigger and didn't have a musty smell. I guess I still preferred my stay previously at the old block. As usual, the stairs can be a pain especially at the end one's trip due to the overbulging luggages! (NB: The rooms chosen were ensuite.)
Service: Other than the one occasion when we got a non-chalant response, all other times were polite, friendly, informative & prompt.
Location: It is very convenient as Zhongshan MRT is just nearby. Shinkong Mitsukoshi, Daiso, Watsons, bank, 7-11 all within walking distance. You can even walk to Taipei Main Station.
Food nearby: The nearest night market is Ningxia, which is still considerably far away about 20 min walk. But sells very good food! There is a dumpling store sells quite delicious dumplings & zha jiang mian. Also, a soya bean eatery which sells good soya bean drink and even better (cheaper than ding tai fung!) xiao long bao. Local market round the corner for fruits. Small stall beside 7-11 for local breakfast such as 蛋饼.
Overall: For the price paid, I must say it's still very much value for money.
