Le Meridien Taipei
Ranked #62 of 573 Hotels in Taipei
Certificate of Excellence

The brand new Le Meridien Taipei is definitely the new gold (or platinum) standard for hotels in Taipei. Since the Meridien is the first western luxury hotel that's opened in Taipei in quite a while, I was really looking forward to trying it out--and I was not disappointed.

Everything about the hotel was great, from the efficient check-in, to the very large and tastefully designed room, to thoughtful amenities, to even the room service. And free wifi!

As a Starwood Platinum member, I was upgraded to a suite, which included a spacious living room, a cavernous bathroom, and a nicely appointed bedroom (and a large closet). All the rooms had advanced lighting controls, which included modes for task lighting as well as indirect night lighting, giving it the feel of an upscale apartment. The bathroom was wall to wall marble, with an enormous shower, double sinks, and a tub with TV--and connected to the bedroom a living rooms with sliding mirrored doors. And the bed and linens were superbly comfortable.

There were many nice touches, such as a Nespresso machine, toiletries from L'Occitane, Blu-Ray players for each of the 2 flat screen TVs.

I ordered room service--nothing gourmet, but the food was delicious, well presented, and delivered promptly.

The gym was equipped with the latest machines, and though I didn't use the indoor pool, I can imagine that after a long day of meetings it would be great to unwind with a swim.

On my way in from the airport, I was reminiscing about staying at the Grand Hyatt some 20 years ago after it had just opened and being impressed at the time, but also how that hotel and some of the others were really showing their age. With Le Meridien, Taipei once again has a hotel which can compare with the top business hotels across Asia.

Having stayed at other Starwood properties in Taipei, we thought we would try the newest Starwood hotel~ it opened at the beginning of November~ and we were excited to try it out. Earlier that day they called to tell us that the check-in time would be delayed until 4 instead of 3 however when we got there at 4:30 we found out that we would have to wait until about 5:45 before we could actually get the room keys. It would have been nice if they had offered us a drink or such at the bar while we waited but nope, nothing and I expected more especially from such a long established hotel brand. Luckily there are several department stores around the hotel and we went browsing while waiting, but we were not very happy. When we finally got into the room we were impressed with the size and it is decorated in a modern style and there are some neat touches such as a tv by the bath tub, a nespresso machine in the sitting area and blueray dvd machines ( they don't play out of zone dvds though) but we found some bread crumbs and some small stickers on the carpet which made us feel a bit icky . There are some design flaws where it seems style was more important than function~ the bathroom doors don't have a lock, the water floods out from the shower stall, water splashes out from the sinks too easily and we spent a long time trying to figure out all the light switches and the airconditioning system. the room also has that very newish scent and after spending a night in the room we had to take a walk outside for fresh air. The pool is an indoor pool and rather small with only 3 lanes. We didn't try any of the restaurants but the food should be good as most of the restaurants were fully booked when we tried to have lunch in the hotel. if you like shopping especially at big brand name boutiques this hotel is in prime location but for us we still prefer the Sheraton Taipei.
