1. ABSOLUTELY GO! Excellent food, excellent service -- shout out to Lei Lei and the staff at the front, you guys rock! If you enjoy eating, you cannot miss DTF.

2. Say you can share a table (recommended for solo or couples) and skip the long wait. Not only do you get seated pretty quickly (within 5-10 minutes even during rush), you usually get the big tables next to the windows which have a great view of the hustle & bustle in the restaurant. The tables are not crowded (a seat is left b/w different parties) and often get to meet other happy guests enjoying their dumplings.

3. Try the weekend special mini-dumplings with soup. The bite-size dumplings nestled in a spoon of delicious broth are, if possible , even more awesome.

4. Get some greens (pea shoots, water spinach, etc). If you don't like garlic, you can order these dishes without. Plenty of great dishes (dumplings and otherwise) for vegetarians at DTF.

5. All the dumplings are awesome but for a splurge, try the truffle w/pork. Intensely perfumed with visible slices of truffle, these dumplings are truly memorable.

6. A side-note, DTF has by far the best and cleanest restrooms I have ever seen in a restaurant...

I've visited Din Tai Fung in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and I have to say, the flagship store at Xinyi Street is the best of them all. I arrived at 9.45am in the morning. Just take the the new Zhonghexinlu (orange) line to Dogmen station and exit 2 and you will find Din Tai Fung Xinyi which is a mere 1 minute walk away. Being the first customer of the restaurant, the staff was friendly and spoke to me in Japanese, and I had to say "Boku wa nihonjin dewa nakute, marehsia jin da". They have japanese and english speaking staff. The food is superb, the Xiao Long Bao is to die for, I would recommend that you try the orignal one then go for the others. The fried rice is also nice done. The service level you get here is really top of the line, the waitress are very attentive to your needs, you put your jacket on the backrest of the chair and they will cover it for you with a velvet cover, if you have a big bag, they will give you a basket to put the bag, if you are eating slow, they will time the arrival of the next dish you order....this is a must go to place if you are in Taipei

From what I heard, this is the original where Din Tai Fung started!

First thing to expect:
- Long lines (about 40 minutes) anytime during the day or night
- Go directly to the front and sign yourself in
- You will receive a remote beeper. In the meantime, visit neighboring small shops around this area. There are actually cool shops in one of the oldest towns in Taiwan.

Must-eat:
- The famous xiaolongbao (you don't have to order the other dishes and simply eat this dish only and still be extremely satisfied)

My favorite:
- Pouring the vinegar on the sliced ginger where you dip your xiaolongbao on it

You can:
- Order halves of each dish, if the entire dish is huge
- Refill those delicious slices of ginger

Cool things to know:
- Multilingual staff (English, Korean, Japanese, even German! as a few)
- Souvenir shelf at the entrance (my wife got the Xiaolongbao keychain - I have to admit, it was cute)

after trying many dtf restaurants everywhere else, my friend and I finally went to this very first (origin) dtf restaurant in Taipei on a Sunday.

food quality/taste was similar with other branches. we ordered xiao long tang pau (only available in taipei dtf shops on limited hours; basically smaller xiao long pau which comes with an extra bowl of soup); fried pork ribs (good); vege bun (found its skin too thick; didn't like its filling either); glutinous meat dumpling (not very tasty); steamed prawn dumpling (turned out to be ace); and steam red bean cake for dessert (so-so).

service was fantastic however. all staffs serve with broad smile and right attitude/professionalism. frequently checked the table for refilling of tea and very attentive with customer request. two thumbs up.

by the time we left (about 1130am), crowds started to build and the queue went crazy by 1230.

all said, the greatest edge dtf has is its food quality and service standardization (like mcd if u like) - if u have tried other dtf shop(s), there is absolutely no need to queue 2 hours for the same thing at the hq.

We arrived in Taipei late last night and there was no doubt that Din Tai Fung would be our first meal today. As usual, awesome experience.

Upon arrival you are put on the wait list and you get to order right away. Your food is ready when your table is ready. American restaurants: learn something here...

The dumplings are absolutely amazing. It is a mystery to me how they can enclose those juicy fillings without having the dough of the skins get soggy. I personally like the vegetarian ones best, as well as the shrimp and green gourd. The appetizers are very good as well with the cucumbers and pea shoots being my favorite. When in season, I strongly recommend the sautéed ferns. Of course, the sticky rice with red beans completes this excellent experience.

I have tried the noodle dishes and soups as well, but these are items that I can also eat at home. As such I only focus on the dumplings.

Finally, as pointed out by some, you can eat at Din Tai Fung also in some selected US locations. However, the mother ship on Xinyi road with its narrow stair case and uninterrupted click clack of the bowls and plates has a flair that no other branch can match.
