This restaurant is at par with Ding-Tai-Fong. steam-fried bao 生煎包 is their specialty along with famous Shanghai dishes. It located at the very busy(as always) Yong-Kang-Street. nice and beautiful setting. nice service. expensive but not outragious. food is really good. The fried "new year cake" 炒年糕 is excellent. don't miss it.

“Exquisite dumplings and less crowd...”

This restaurant is just around the corner from Din Tai Fung, the local dumpling institution, but it is better in terms of less tourists, less crowd, larger selection of food. We had dumplings, of course, rice with shrimps and many other dishes including local desserts (I can't remember the names...) and everything was very enjoyable! My personal suggestion: skip the long line at Din Tai Fung and get here instead.

“Good in its own right”

We enjoyed our dinner at Kao Chi - really good xiao long bao and spicy pork dumplings. (Though I have to say Din Tai Fung's pork xiao long bao is more refined.) The restaurant did not have some of the other dishes that we wanted. But we had a good dinner. I loved their steamed egg yolk and cream bun!

The restaurant is easy to find - just around the corner from Din Tai Fung (Chung Hsiao Road) - but less crowded. Diners who can't stand to wait for a table at Din Tai Fung would enjoy dining here as an alternative.

“Overpriced, average food at best, but immediate seating.”

When we arrived, the crowd was made up of expats, tourists, and large groups of locals. It was not well lit, and a lot of the reviews here compare it to Din Tai Fung. If it came down to a choice between Kao Chi and Din Tai Fung, I'd go to Din Tai Fung. This is also more expensive than Din Tai Fung, but that may be because of the Dong Po we ordered here.

I did not have the dumplings, but here are my thoughts on the three things we did try.

1. The Dong Po Pork was very good. The portion size was good for two, and it was not too fatty.
2. The Pork Fried Rice was tasteless. I've had better fried rice from Panda Express. The restaurant also did not offer salt, pepper, or soy sauce on the table. The portion size was good for two.
3. The Seasonal Mixed Vegetables were also tasteless. Contrary to the plural description, it was a single mixed vegetable, which was skinnier and tougher tasting than on choy.

Total was NT$980.

“Delicious dumplings (you can skip Din Tai Fung), warm service”

Had a delicious lunch here today (9 Jan, 中山店). The goal was dumplings á la Din Tai Fung. This place was better -- lovely atmosphere -- pretty place with good jazz!, no waiting for a table, and warm service. I was with three Japanese colleagues -- one in particular adores dumplings -- and we all were happy. A few Kao Chi menu items are not available at this branch, but it's no bother. There's plenty to enjoy. Special thanks to "Ken" from Vancouver, a charming young fellow just starting as a waiter here -- your good humor made for a memorable lunch! 謝謝!
