We had just returned from an all-day tour at the Takoro Gorge. Not wanting to waste time, i.e., go back to the hotel and sleep, we chose to explore the Shilin Night Market. Easily accessible from the Taiwan Main Station, take the Tamsui Line, count 6 stops on the metro and get off at the Jiantan station. We plunge into an atmosphere that clearly rivals our experiences at the Seoul and Busan Korean street markets in crowds, color and chaos -- EVERYTHING is for sale and you can bargain your way up and down blocks and blocks and blocks of shops, kiosks, and sidewalk vendors. Locals and tourists alike crowd the streets, filling inside, outside alleyways; people-watching is as interesting as shopping. Redolent food aromas mix into an otherwise wonderfully frenzied atmosphere – it’s an absolute-must-visit.

Don't get what all the fuss is about with this place. Food was average at the few stalls we tried. There seemed to be more people just browsing than actually buying.
The basement food market was packed, not recommended if you're claustrophobic.
And definitely not a place to take young children.

Shilin night market's conveniently located so getting there via the train is very easy. Stalls start to open around 4pm and the place gets much more lively as night falls. The basement food hall was crowded and seemed to have a lot of food - but after walking one round, the variety actually wasn't that much. The food was somewhat generic. There were at least 5 stalls selling the same food at the same price, at the same food hall! I didn't know which stall to buy from! Other than that, there were many shops selling clothes and all. The clothes were mainly loud, bold street fashion - didn't seem to interest me much.

Look out for the traffic too - motorcycles zip by along the same path where pedestrians walk. The night market wasn't as "hyped up" as I had expected. I would prefer Xi Men Ding anytime.
Recommended for those who LOVE eating street food and shopping at the same time. Try their local snacks.

Enjoyed looking at the knickknacks laid out at Shilin. Although rainy on the days we were there, the roof made it possible for us to walk around unhampered by the rain. Also enjoyed trying the food.

Getting to Shilin market was pretty easy. As it is the CHinese New Year season in Feb, everyone is on holidays and thus, the market was so pack that you can't even walk along the stalls! The food was ok but everyone was actually walking on the roads to get around! Nothing special to buy there except food. I prefer the market at Taiching, Fenjia Market. The famous taiwan sausages was the best food of the nite!
