Review of Confucius Temple

Confucius Temple
Reviewed August 17, 2013

I've visited about 15 Confucius Temples in China and Taiwan. The Tainan Temple is one of the best preserved anywhere. Though small in scale (about the same size at the Taipei temple), it served as Taiwan's principal temple under the Qing. They've refrained from adding much paint to the spirit tablets, so the colors of the interior halls are quite beautiful. Be sure to step into the Yicheng Academy behind the main hall, to the right. This academy remains the primary destination for aspiring scholars who come to offer prayers in front of the spirit tablet of Confucius and to the Five Deities of Wenchang, which literally sits right in front of Confucius's tablet – which places Confucius in the primary ritual position, even though he sits behind Wenchang.

Great temple, calming, and turning you into a complementation moode, compairing to others overloaded with colors and gold. Worth visting for sure. At the nearby corner is a grocery with fresh buns - we loved them!

Just an average example of a temple. Not worth the effort unless you are a temple addict and have a spare 10 minutes

The temple is situated in the city centre and is more like a museum than a real temple. There are exhibits of ancient musical instruments and more recent college dresses

One of the oldest temples in Taiwan, this one is beautiful. There are some gorgeous trees and a turtle pond on the outside. On the inside there are many rooms filled with artifacts. If you are lucky, you can see a live musical performance. In the morning, there is kung fu and tai chi and in the evening there is usually a group of dancers.
