“Wei-Yat Grand Hotel (as we know it)”
Reviewed May 7, 2014

We were assigned to room 511 - then later found out that the fifth floor is the top floor to this hotel. It seems, the higher floors above the hotel are actually apartments or condos (at one point we were offered to see the penthouse as it was for rent!). The thing that was very noticeable right-away was that all the front desk staff members really liked each other. They worked in such a lighthearted happy unison...which was wonderful to see! Sorry, we couldn't say the same about the breakfast room staff. On the whole they were all dull and did not necessarily refill some of the empty chafing dishes as needed. Tung Yat Cantonese Restaurant in floor B1 serves an evening all you can eat Dim Sum (priced per person). For a refreshing change of pace visit C'est Café - and get to not only eat + drink something Western but speak English with the very delightful owner, Lisa Wu! Both restaurant and café offers a discount for hotel guests and there is a self-service laundry on the 3rd. floor (with no 4th. floor).

We chose the location due to it being closer to the ocean and canal. However our friends travelling with us find the location too far from the action and somewhat smelly at times!

We only stayed here one night. The service on check-in is rather quick and they speak rather good english. Unlike the restaurant downstairs and during breakfast.

We had dinner in the restaurant in the basement. The food was rather good but it was quite a hassle to order something and to find out what it was that we ordered. Although it was cheap and the food was good, it was not our best dinner during our trip.

The rooms were not completely clean with a lot of stains on the floor of both myself and my brother's room. The bed and bathroom was clean and correct but could do better as well. I don't know if it was because of the 2 buses with older tourists that stayed at the hotel, but it was very noisy, especially because of the fact that the hotel has some open place in the middle around which the rooms are situated at different levels, the tourists were having drinks overthere and one could enjoy this live in the room.

The next morning the breakfast was again average and nothing really special, I have had much better in other hotels in Taiwan. Service at the counter at check-out was quick again and they arranged for a good driver to take us some 100 kilometers away which was good as well, they gave him good directions.

Overall I would not come back here as it does not stand out, is not clean and quite noisy. Price was correct but could not compensate for the defaults.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher levels, far away from the elevator for a quiet sleep.

My wife and I stayed here four nights. This place has all the amenities a westerner is used to, unlike most places in Taiwan. A buffet breakfast is included and is immaculate - everything you could think of, including vegetarian, dumplings, noodles, toast, hard boiled eggs, tea, coffee, juice, fresh fruit. Room was spacious, with a large bathroom, including a shower stall and separate bath tub, regular toilet. Room has a refrigerator, A/C, TV, and hot water machine. Didn't use the pool, so can't comment on that. Saw the "Fitness Center", rather small, but would do in a pinch. Hotel also had coin-operated washers and dryers for doing your own laundry.

Room Tip: Located across the street from the river, so ask for a room on the river side for a nice view.
