I have ridden elephants in India and the US and I've NEVER seen treatment of the animals like I saw at this park site. The guide that was leading our elephant hit her so hard and stabbed her with a prod that she was bleeding quite bad from her ear. Now granted I wasn't happy with the chained animals at the breeding center either, but any animal in captivity has some sort of shackle be it a cage, a fence, or a chain. Thus I had a feeling I'd see something of this nature at the breeding center - though you would believe that they'd have a bit more freedom than they do. But my real disgust is with the elephant safari - sure I saw some spotted deer, bark deer, a wild boar and 2 rhinos, but was that worth the mistreatment of the elephant - absolutely not. And you could see the fear in my companion's face when the elephant would run, roar, turn in circles, and shake a tree in anger - this went on for a solid 15-20 mins while the guide continuously beat her with a wood stick and metal poker. Don't support this portion of the business - demand better treatment by choosing other means of getting out there, i.e. foot, canoe, or jeep.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your time to write a review.

We are very sorry for the experience you had, however we never organize a trip for you and suggesting you to write a review in a company/hotel you use for the safari.

We have been running a jungle trips for a long time and we always give an option doing a jeep safari for our clients.

Once again, I hope you will write a review for the correct company who you used for the adventure.

Have a nice day!

Regards,
Bishnu

After a week of relaxing in sauraha and trying to figure out what are the best options for budget travellers we decided to go on a one day jungle walk combined with a morning two hours canu (3,350 Nrp. Per person in a group of three). It's better to take the long canu than the shorter for really enjoying the way down the river, and it's also better to leave late morning so the sun will be out and so will the crocodiles. The jungle walk in this season is tricky because the grass is high and it's very difficult to spot animals. I think that it is more for the walking experience inside the jungle, which you can do only with a guide inside the park or in the buffer zone a day after you've been inside the park. The best season to see animals is spring (march-april) and than it is for sure worthwhile the money.
A different and cheap way to experience the area is to either walk in the buffer zone near the elephant's stable (not the elephant breeding center) where you don't need a guied or either hire a bicycle and ride to the 20,000 lakes, also located in the buffer zone north-west from Sauraha, about 1.5-2 hours ride each direction (entrance fee 100 Nrp. plus bicycle fee about 150-200 Nrp.). The main lake is really beautiful and you can see wild animals as well.

It was very, very sad to see the female elephants and their babies chained in the Breeding center
The best, the safari with elephant, where we can see rhinos, also the route with canoe in the river
