I stayed here for 4 nights in November 2010 and really enjoyed it. The room was very comfortable and there was a good heater for the chilly nights. They have a great garden area where you can sit, and also a rooftop deck with great views of the city and mountains. The staff were very helpful and the price is amazing value. Breakfast was excellent. It wasn't included in the room price, but it was very reasonable. The location is also great, on the edge of the Thamel tourist area and within walking distance of the Durbar Square.

Why I probably won't return:
I booked on-line and re-confirmed twice. When I arrived at 11:30pm after 36 hours of flights from the US, I was told my room had been sold and I was shuttled off to the low quality hotel next door. This is a regular occurence at the Ganesh Himal - I met two other guests who had the same issue during my 4 night stay. As a solo female traveler, I am very careful to book my first night in advance at a reputable hotel - and I did not appreciate their cavalier attitude about 'reservations'.

Good points:
Excellent garden
Nice restaurant staff
Great location just outside Thamel
Nicely decorated rooms
Lovely doorman
Free internet
Free filter water
Prakash at the travel desk was very helpful

Needs improvement:
Room maintenance - my toilet never worked properly, even after two attempts to repair
Attitude of front desk employees - it seemed as if guests requesting help were an annoyance to the ladies working the front desk during the day shift. The gentleman who worked evenings was more helpful

The hotel is family run and the ladies at the front desk are very nice and helpful. The rooms were very clean and some of them quite spacious. The rooms I had on different occations had an attached bath and TV. I definetly would return again.

The only negative point I would have to mention is that the light curtain do not block out much light from the large windows. So when the sun rises one hase to rise as well. If you want to sleep in a bit not so good otherwise you are fine.

I believe you people have already read the positive comments of this hotel and indeed, the reviews are pretty accurate. I stayed for 5 nights here and have wonderful room and foods (value for money)

The location is good but they do have some noisy neighbors. Should this affect you, bring along sone disposal ear plug and its work.

The tour counter will recommended hotels in pokhara/chitwan and transportation, which, its a little pushy for sales to be completed. Its definitely a good idea to take up their services should you haven't plan for one.

Food wise, they serve really good foods as compare to thamel and the quality can be as good as some feature restaurants in the guidebook.

Wifi surfing shouldn't be a problem for those rooms near to the garden, else, you may have to move downstair to get some signals.

Overall, very good hotel.

A nice hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Thamel. Only a short walk to the popular sights. We were met at the airport despite our flight being delayed landing by 2 hrs which was great. For the money the deluxe double rooms are good and quite big. Friendly staff and nice breakfasts. This would have been our choice again on our way back but our plans changed. Would recommend.

Room Tip: Book double delux room on top floor.

We had a deluxe room which was clean and comfortable. The restuarant was good and reasonably priced. The wifi didn't work very well in our room. The travel desk was over priced compared to thamel. The website says 24 hour power guaranteed which isn't true. They turn the power off at midnight. I think they should have signs informing you of that as we were in the middle of a movie when it turned off. Also it is pitch black when the power is off and maybe they should have flashlights in each room. The second time we stayed they overbooked and didn't have our room. The desk clerk made us show her our reservation and then tried to put us up at the hotel next door which is really run down and nothing like the room we had booked. We decided to find our own room in Thamel which took 3 hours of walking around as most hotels were booked up last minute. Overall it is a good hotel.

The Ganesh Himal is one of those hotels that's hard to give it a bad review because your experience depends on your particular stay and how it went - Was your reservation honored? Who checked you in? Which room did you get? And How important is it to you to have lights and hot water?

The hotel seems to get good reviews, but we have stayed there several times in the last two months and our experiences vary not only from our point of view, but from others who have stayed there.

The first time we stayed our reservation was honored and we got a standard room with no fan, no TV and sometimes hot water. The room had two twin beds and was at a corner with windows on two sides. The room was a nice size except that the bathroom was tiny and seemed very neglected. The clasp on the door was falling off and the handle on the toilet did not flush and getting a hot shower was a hit or miss. The brown towels offered by the hotel are in good condition but are made from a synthetic fabric that does not dry.

The next time we stayed our reservation was honored, but we did telephone and were given a smaller room with so much furniture that the beds were literally flush up against the bathroom door. This time we got a TV (that we didn't want) that was so huge it took over one entire section of the room.

The lights in the hotel were often out (typical for Nepal). The hotel's generator did not come on during the early morning hours. Most guests were setting out to catch an early flight only to be left to pack in pitch darkness until the sun came up.

When the generator does come on it is located in the garden area and the fumes are very strong making it challenging to sit out in the garden without feeling the consequences of the toxins. The fumes also make their way into the rooms that are facing the garden area.

The hotel manual clearly states that they offer 24 hour room service but when I asked for a cup of tea at 5 a.m. I was rudely told by the staff that the 24 hr room service does not begin until 6:30 a.m. So no breakfast – No tea – No coffee for the early trekkers.

While sitting in the lobby we noticed that some folks were offered a complimentary beverage while they waited for their rooms and others were just left to wait with no complimentary beverage.

We also saw several irate guests at the reception desk whose reservations had not been honored with no place to go. At one point a female guest was so distraught that she left crying as the two female receptionists giggled to themselves and carried on with their conversation if nothing had happened.

This would all have been tolerable and perhaps typical for Katmandu except it seems the folks that work at the Ganesh Himal have become quite complacent. Perhaps victims of their own success as it often happens when a hotel or restaurant is listed in the current LP guide.

The hotel does have some perks such as a garden sitting area and restaurant, free filtered water bottle dispenser with cold water and sometimes hot water, free Wifi in lobby and garden, free internet terminals in the lobby and free luggage storage while you trek. The hotel's cleaning crew are all very nice and efficient. They keep the rooms spotless and are very generous with the TP and the hand soap.

Recommend? I would say that there are plenty of choices in Thamel and in Katmandu that you really don't need to stay here, but if you are keen on staying here just know that your reservation will more likely be honored if you telephone instead of email. Or better yet just walk-in, check out a few rooms and make up your mind.

Room Tip: Walk-in and see what they have to offer.
