This hotel is great! Extremely good value! We paid around $55 per night for a double room in low season. Everything was perfect. In particular there is reliable hot water, extremely friendly and helpful staff, and great breakfast (the kind you expect in a 4-5 star hotel!). Only problem was wireless which we could not get on the 4th floor and had to go to lobby to use but it was free!

I find reviews here difficult to judge sometimes because you never really know the reviewers background or expectations so here is a little about me to help you judge my review: I travel a lot with my work and on these business trips usually stay in 4 and 5 star hotels, so I am used to a bit of luxury, and to be quite honest, I can be a bit fussy. However, when travelling for personal reasons I can't afford the sort of luxury I have on business trips which can grate a bit sometimes because I am a bit spoilt and have high expectations.

Anyway, this hotel did not disappoint; the best value hotel I have ever stayed in! Unless you are stinking rich, then this is the hotel for you in Kathmandu! No need to look any further!

Lets cut to the chase, Pros and Cons and reasons I recommend this place.

Pros:

1. Service
Staff always went the extra bit (fluent in English) weather it be letting me know what the taxi fair to a certain destination should be, how to book a bus to Pokhara, organising a packed breakfast or printing documentation for me, it was all done with a smile. One of the reception staff also taught me yoga free of charge for a couple of one on one sessions, whilst the staff organised dry-cleaning for me which was not typically offered. Their commitment to customers was on par if not better than some 5 star Hotels.

2. Location.
Taxis, shops, restaurants, bars, adventure tours, and convenience stores are everywhere near this hotel. The best part was that it is situated a small street away from the noise of bustling Thamel so sleeping was never an issue. Nice to be able to step out of the chaos for a while. There were some issues with taxi drivers not knowing where the Hotel was, but as soon as you know a few streets in thamel this was not an issues (close to the main road entering thamel)

3. Value
This would class as a mid range hotel in Thamel, with places that are definitely much more expensive (not as well located) and much much cheaper (not as clean, closer to the noise etc) and therefore it fits into the nice middle ground. When I booked this hotel I was trying to save money but it definitely was extremely good value.

4.Relative Cleanliness
The rooms are liveable, towels are okay, shower was fine. Much better than some more expensive places available.

Cons
1.Wifi signal was weak at times (just go to ANY restaurant and they have wifi 24/7)
2. Power outages (Nepal is notorious for this - this hotel had generators but they did not run 24/7)

Reasons to Stay Here:
1. The staff are happy to give you local knowledge of how to do things, how to get places, what you should be paying for what etc. This is priceless
2. It is located in the heart of Thamel (great place to visit) yet is quiet.
3. The price for a room suggests that this hotel is not as good as it actually is. You may be thinking "why is it that cheap" but you really get value for money here.

I stayed at this Hotel for 2 weeks, loved my stay in Thamel and would thoroughly recommend this as a base for travelling in Nepal.

Room Tip: Lower floors have better Wifi access

The Holy Himalaya Hotel has a great location in the Thamel district of Kathmandu. The rooms are clean, have heating and air conditioning. in room WiFi and everything else you would expect from a nice hotel. The rooms and bathroom are of good size with a nice desk, extra chairs and a coffee table. One thing to be aware of in Kathmandu is that electrical outages occur daily but at this hotel seem to be limited to late morning to early afternoon. Usually this is the time you would be out of the hotel.

Great location, in a quiet street but still close to the busy shops and restaurants of Thamel.

They have a lovely little terrace on roof-top with actual grass.

The hotel provides free airport transfer, even at night, and that's very appreciable for newbies who don't want to argue with taxi drivers at midnight...

Staff is friendly. Hotel and rooms are nicely decorated. Breakfast is fine.

Got a room on 4th floor. Very peaceful during night time. Towels and bed sheets could be cleaner though... And to get actually hot water, one has to wait until morning, but it's the same in most of Nepal hotels...

Holy Himalaya is fantastic place to stay, especially if you are transiting through KTM. It is a budget hotel, but it was clean and comfortable with really good service. Breakfast was fairly good too. Hot water is guaranteed between 6 and 9 am and pm every day which is a pleasant reliability given the power situation in Nepal. It also has free wifi - which came and went, but during our second day it was reasonably fast for Nepal and stayed on for a fair while. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we had no cause for complaint. It is a budget hotel, but you get a lot for what you pay for.

The hotel is centrally located and you can walk to Durbar Square. There is plenty of souvenirs shops and the local market right around the corner. The property is located on a side street, in a quiet location away from the crowd and the noise. There is a patio with tables where you can sit outside and relax with a beer and a cigarette. The hotel is comfortable, rooms are spacious and the Internet connection is very good. Restaurants are everywhere. I did not eat at the hotel but they gave me hot tea and prepared a box-to-go with breakfast when I left for the airport very early. My only complaint is about the flushing system of the toilets. I used one in the common area and it was clogged. Also the toilet in my bathroom did not flush properly. Overall the hotel is worthy the little money they charge.
