“Warning: the manager is a crook!”
Reviewed February 18, 2009

The hotel itself if clean enough and reasonably good value at around $10USD, but the manager of the place will cheat you and lie to you and rip you off. Do not stay here.

We stayed at the Blue Horizon for 2 nights in September 2007.

Advantages:
- Close to Thamel down a back lane, so away from the hustle and bustle.
- Hotel is quite unique as it has a meriad of stairs and ladders to get to the higher rooms. This means that the rooftop has nice outdoor common seating areas on different levels.
- TV in the rooms (reception is a little fuzzy, but better than none).
- Internet in the hotel lobby.
- Very close to the Greenline Bus station for an early start to Pokara or elsewhere.

Disadvantages:
- The hotel promises 24hr Hot Showers as they depend not only on solar heating but have a generator on standby. We didn't have any hot water for 2 full days although we informed the staff that it will be raining all day. They preferred to pray to the weather "gods" instead of using their generator.
- Price/Performance doesn't match other hotels in Thamel (Kathmandu). The hygiene of the room leaves a lot to be desired.
- We paid 20 USD/night + 13% Tax, however the Tax is something which needs to be clarified up front. This was our first hotel in Kathmandu, so we assumed the price was inclusive of local taxes.
- You have to pass all the men at the front desk everytime you go in and out. Everytime we were confronted with a barrage of questions. They staff are too pushy to sell tour packages.
- The dogs in Kathmandu sleep all day and bark all night. This hotel is in a quiet location, all the better to hear the concert of dogs barking all night. The locals don't seem to mind.

For us, the disadvantages outweighed the advantages, so we moved to more pleasant and cheaper hotels in Thamel during our 12 day stay there.

  • Liked — The meriad of stairs and rooftops
  • Disliked — Cold water and barking dogs

Hotel Blue Horizon [--] is close to the popular Thamel region of Kathmandu but is semi-secluded on a side street away from the hubbub. We stayed in a deluxe double room which was comfortable enough, but the bed mattress was just OK. There was adequate hot water day or night for multiple showers, and the hotel has a generator so if the city power goes off, there is still electricity. The hotel restaurant serves good wholesome food, but it is not particularly imaginative. The rooftop gardens are pleasant lounging areas. The only gripe I have with the hotel is that they have their own tour agency(Nepal Vision Treks) and try to get the guests signed in to their trips and tours as soon as they check-in to the hotel--right after a welcome hospitality drink.! While the tour packages they offer are OK to good, they charge significantly more than if you booked your own tour with many of the tour operators outside of the hotel.

  • Liked — Quiet, Mellow, close to interesting area(Thamel) but just far away from hubbub.
  • Disliked — Hotel has own tour agency (Nepal Vision Treks) which gets to you just after you arrive from airport and books treks and tours at exorbitant rates
