“Great location”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Hotel Encounter Nepal is at an excellent location on the edge of the Thamel tourist (shopping district). Its just enough out of the way to be quiet but not so far away that you have to hike. The hotel is clean, and the staff are eager to help out.

Room Tip: Get room 402 or 401 if they are free (402 is the best in the hotel IMHO).

I stayed three nights in this hotel. Hotel staff was very kind and was really comfortable.
The hotel is located in northen side of Thamel and convinient place and easy to access the Thamel, but slightly far from Dubar square.
I highly recommend to stay this hotel.

Room Tip: located nothern side of Thamel and very silent

We stayed at the Hotel Encounter Nepal in total almost 2 full weeks.
We ended up quite ill with a stomach parasite and took refuge until our flight here. The staff were amazing, the location was amazing, the food was fantastic and the school next door provided for some of our fondest memories of this trip.
Hotel Encounter Nepal will definitely be seeing us again and I cannot wait to reunite with the friends we made!

This review is long overdue as I stayed here in May with my husband and again in June after we completed a trek to Poon Hill. It's a great place to stay! Located just a few minutes away from the main shops in Nepal, Hotel Encounter is a great location if you want to be in heart of Thamel. Nepal was the first stop for us on our trip around SE Asia and we didn't know what to expect. As soon as we arrived at Hotel Encounter, Bhadri the hotel manager, made us feel very welcome and we were referred to from that point on as Bhaiyya and Bhabi (brother and sister in law) in the traditional Nepalese way. I think the fact that we could speak Hindi really helped as we could chat away with the staff and before you know it, after a couple of days the place felt like home. Saying that all the staff speak English well. From the reception staff, bar staff to the kitchen staff, we were spoilt by the Nepalese hospitality! This was our first experience of budget accommodation as we had always done the big hotels on traditional holidays, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms were cleaned everyday by polite and trustworthy staff. They had air conditioning, tv and a hairdryer on request if you needed one. The first room we stayed in was towards the back of the building facing a school courtyard. If you don't want to be woken by school children every morning then ask for a room at the front. Saying that, we actually got used to the super cute children singing their national anthem every morning and loved watching them. The second room we stayed in was on the first floor facing the restaurant. This had good wifi reception. Please note that in Nepal the electricity will go off randomly. The good thing is Hotel Encounter tell you the approximate times this will happen so it’s good to know for when you need to charge phones etc. The hotel restaurant was centred around a nicely landscaped garden area. I found the food to be very good though pricier than some places we went to in Thamel. They had quite a big menu offering the traditional daal bhat along with a variety of meat or vegetarian dishes. All delicious. My favourite was definitely the chicken Momo's! In fact I loved them so much that I asked Hari Shrestha the restaurant manager if I could learn how to make them. Before you know it, I was in the kitchen with all the chefs getting a one to one cookery lesson! Thanks to Hari, Balbahadur,Teg Bahadur and Girendra Thapa for putting up with my terrible attempts at shaping the Momo's!! They tasted great though!
Badri the hotel manager and Raj also arranged our trip to Bandipur mountain resort and Poon Hill. Our guide Amrit accompanied us along with Deepak the driver who took us to Bandipur for one night before the trek. Amrit looked after us really well during our Poon Hill Trek, especially when our legs felt like giving up after climbing the 3000 steps at Ulleri and we will always cherish those memories of playing cards in the tea houses or having a few beers in Bandipur. So would I stay at Hotel Encounter again? Hell yes! Its a great place to go if you want to see a friendly face, have dinner and escape the chaos of Thamel. The eating areas are really nice and they have themed area outside to chill out in and read. Thanks to all the hardworking staff for making our trip so memorable and for making us feel so welcome. Even though you may have forgotten us we definitely haven't forgotten you!

Room Tip: Rooms on the front overlooking the garden are quieter, though be prepared for some religious music c...

Good hotel, management are good and hospitality is nice. We opted for the budget room in the older building. The room wasn't anything special but adequate for the price. Everyday the cleaners tidied the room without us asking, something that doesn't always happen in budget rooms in nepal.

We found the restaurant good but overpriced compsred to other tourist places. We also arranged tours through Black Diamond expeditions at the desk in the hotel. They were worthwhile, fairly priced and I would also recommend them.
