I spent a few months in kathmandu and didn't want to be based in thamel all the time because it's all just built and centred around tourists. i chose to live in Asan and think it's great. If you love bustling streets full of life and people and interesting things going on everywhere you look, you will love it too. It's a great area to shop and most of the stall holders will give you a fair price even if you're a tourist - unlike thamel. Come in the early evening for the vegetable market and for the most atmosphere. It's true that it's chaotic but that's part of the fun! I recommend coming on a dry day if possible because things do get a little muddy if it has rained. The streets that radiate off the market square are so interesting and you'll feel far from the tacky tourism of thamel - no one hassling you to buy stuff. If you're a photographer you could easily spend a whole day wandering and discovering.

Like I said its over populated and dirty. I would rather recomend anybody to take a taxi instead of going through Asan to your destination. Having said that though if you love the hustle and bustle of the city then will Asan could actually work out for you.

Asan alternative name Asan Tol is a ceremonial, market and residential square in central Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is one of the most well-known historical locations in the city and is famed for its bazaar, festival calendar and strategic location. Asan has been described as one of the fine Newar examples of a traditional Asian bazaar.

Asan straddles one of the two legendary India-Tibet trade routes that pass through Kathmandu. Because of this history, Asan has been one of the city's main marketplaces since ancient times.

Six streets converge on Asan giving the square a perpetual bustle. The bazaar at Asan attracts shoppers from all over Kathmandu because of the tremendous variety of merchandise sold here, ranging from foodstuffs, spices and textiles to electronics and bullion. Asan is also one of the popular tourist spots in the city because of its architectural sights and charming ambiance. There are banks, restaurants and a post office. Two taxi stands and bus stops are situated on the eastern side.

Its not a tourist destination as such but if you want to see nepalese crowd, people's movement, local vegetables and other trades around Asan area, you will of course enjoy it (especially if you have not see such crowd before). For a normal Nepali its normal thing.
