“Excellent place for day hiking!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

This is excellent spot for day hiking. This forest is secured by Nepalese Army but only recommended taking guide or individual group travel. Do not go alone for safety reason. 3 hrs hike to top of Nagarjuana gives you awesome landscapes scenery including view of Whole Kathmandu valley.

“A great forest walk only a few minutes from the city!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2013

A short taxi ride from the centre of the city is a quality hike to a fantastic view point. Looking across the cityscape to the northwest you can see a forested mountain rising up behind the monkey temple. The highest point is 2095m where a small white Buddhist shrine can be seen on the skyline.
The main entrance is 2km north of Baluju. Note that you need photo ID to enter the reserve as security is tight since two foreign tourists were murdered here in 2005. Rather than pay someone to drive you to the top, we walked up a very steep but well marked 5km trail. I lost track of the number of stone steps alone the way, but there must be more than 1000! There is also a police post about 1/4 of the way up. Walking at a leisurely pace we arrived at the top after 2 hours or so. The view of the distant mountains is stunning and includes the Annapurna massif. Its also fun to see aircraft flying below you in the valley as they head in to the airport. There is a small viewing tower at the top. Unlike other locations, there is none of the street vendor, shops, hustle and bustle that you come to expect around Kathmandu. You have to come back down the same way, although in the past there was a track heading down to the south. The road is 17km back to the entrance so not much of an option for walking.

“Peaceful setting in the middle of otherwise overwhelming Kathmandu...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

Nagarjuna Forest Reserve is a great day trip to experience the peacefulness and natural beauty that abounds in Nepal but can often be lost in the craziness of Kathmandu. There is a road that is passable, but by no means easy that leads to the Nagarjuna Stupa located on a hill outside of the city limits. The road is bearable in a car when it is not wet. I made the mistake of taking a motorcycle there with a friend after a rainstorm and experienced multiple muddy slide-outs along the way resulting in lovely exhaust burns on my legs. The final experience of seeing the Stupa and view from the watch tower there was nice, but it is much better to get there from the safety of a car. Of interest to Buddhists is the story that the Stupa was built to commemorate the cave-residence of Nagarjuna Buddha. Also if you are only in town for a short time it is probably not worth the trip as there are plenty more exciting things to see and do in and around Kathmandu.

“A great nature workout, close to the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2012

Nagarjun is a great place place to get in shape for your next trek! Just a short taxi ride from Thamel, pack up a lunch and get ready for a good half-day hike. It's a short (5K) walk from the entrance to the top -- but it's a VERY steep, a 740 meter ascent. In the old days, it was a slippery climb (and moreso, descent) -- but now there are stone steps the whole way (I estimate close to 4000 steps!!!) Once you reach the top, there are mountain views (weather permitting), a small stupa, a viewing tower, and several shelters where you can relax and have your lunch. There is also a road that you can drive to the top (but I haven't done that).

Entrance fee (for walking) is Rs250, but BE FORWARNED -- the military folks at the entrance insist that you leave a picture ID (e.g. a drivers license) with them at the gate, and then you pick it up when you return. This is an attempt to ensure that they know if anybody does not return -- thus they can initiate a search for you. I didn't have an extra ID to leave with them, but by speaking some Nepali and presssing the issue, they let me go without it...
