“Updates to my previous good review”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

After my last visit to Potala Guest House, I was happy to see three new improvements in the facility. 1) The bathrooms have been renovated, which is good as they were the area needing a little attention. Now, given the typical standards of a budget hotel in Asia, they are very nice. 2) They have once again re-opened an in-house kitchen to serve breakfast. The meals are simple but having a freshly cooked meal served within 2-3 minutes scores big with my busy schedule in Kathmandu. 3) They now have wi-fi throughout the hotel. Previously having use to two very old and slow desk-top computers in the lobby was helpful but having wireless access 24/7 is awesome for all the work I need to get done there. And the wi-fi is on a solar powered battery system, so it never goes down during the periodic power shedding periods.
The staff has not improved, as it is very hard to improve something that is already EXCELLENT. The desk and lobby staff is by far the most helpful and friendly I have found in the past 40 countries I have been to.

Good:
1) Location is good - at the end of main Thamel street.
2) Price is adequate
3) Stuff on the reception is ok

Not good:
1) There is inner yard, and many windows of the rooms looks at this yard. Late evening, night, early morning it's very noisy there! Some tourists, and even stuff sitting there and speaking, laughing loudly, smoking.
2) Service stuff is strange - for example in morning time they can walk near the room's windows in the inner yard or along stairs and making VERY loud and VERY disgusting sounds with their nose and mouth.
3) Rooms are very dark and not enough clean
4) Hotel itself looks old and neglected

Paid 14 USD a night for a single room as I stayed during the winter season, which represented great value. The bed had three thick rugs, a key detail given heating in Kathmandu is almost non-existent and overnight temperatures were sub zero. The water was always very hot when I showered, though it's not like that throughout the entire day due to power cuts (don't plan for a shower between 3 and 10pm!) . As a nice touch, the lobby had a water fountain which provided free hot water from which I could fill my bottle. Besides that, the staff were friendly and the location was superb.

Had I gone during the peak season and paid 35 USD a night, I wouldn't be particularly happy, but perhaps all Kathmandu accomodation is expensive at those times of year so in relative terms, it would still represent good value.

Room Tip: Garden view rooms and those on higher floors are probably less noisy.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were clean and comfortable and the back rooms were very quiet. Mattresses not as soft as I would have liked but very good for USD35 per night. Close to eating facilities and all that is Thamel.

On my last yourney (NOV2012) i stayed once again in Potala Guest House. Why ? Becouse i really enjoyed it on my last year visit. Friendly and helpfull stuff made me feel almost as in my home. The hotel had change since my last visit. They modernised most of the rooms, now they looks really nice in warm coloured walls with some pictures or paintings on it. The "western" type of bathroom is quite big, and maybe i was lucky but each time i had had hot water (as you comming to Nepal you need to notice that hot water is not common in most of the hotels even in Thamel). Hotel is 24h monitored by security cameras so you feel safe even when you left your room with open door and leave for a moment.

If you choose PGH remember about three things :
1 - great location in strict center of Thamel,
2 - in reception hall there's a complimentary water and tea for clients,
3 - enjoy resting time on the roof.

sincerely wishes
JD
by the way there's no fitness center and swimming pool in he hotel but i found it better to rate it and not left 1 point ;)

I stayed there with my girlfriend for 2 nights, and was there by myself for another 2 nights. The reception staff were fantastic to deal with - smiling all the time, and quick to respond to any request or question. The rooms were adequately clean, with newly laundered old sheets. Hot water was plentiful. Some of the other positives were its location in Thamel, near the bustle but with its inset location, kept the hotel premise relatively quiet (room dependant); and it's 2 quaint gardens. I stored my stiff there whilst I was on an 7 day trek with no dramas.

They were having a couple of issues with their wifi, the ground floor, reception and gardens were fine, but the rooms were not covered. I think they had resolved this by the last day.

I didnot use their restaurant except for one breakfast , which was ok. However, tea and beers were bought promptly, the latter of course the most important.
