The International Guest House, in spite of a bland name, combines several virtues. It's just a few minutes walk to the hustle and bustle of Thamel, but is located in a quiet area. Outside, it's anonymous, but step inside, and it has a charming Nepali character, with a lovely indoor garden where breakfast is served. There are some nice touches in wood carving and by way of decoration which makes this place a little special and adds some character.

Reception and parking area are also quite spacious by Kathmandu standards, and are bright and welcoming.

My room was large and adequate, with a clean bathroom and a view of the rooftops of Kathmandu. Came with cable TV but bathroom towels were grey with use and the carpet on the floor had seen better days. No ceiling fan although a portable unit can be requested, but it was cool and we slept well.

There's free wifi and bag lockup/deposit, and service is generally quite friendly and good. Breakfast was adequate with a choice of three sets. Excellent value for money.

Room Tip: There's no elevator, rooms on higher floors have good view but involves flights of stairs.

We recently stayed at this guest house. We are a group of 4 ladies, so we had 2 twin rooms. When you walk into this property it is clean, cool and calm. Reception staff were very efficient and helpful. The decoration and wood carving in reception is lovely. It has an outside court yard, and a delightful garden area with tables/seating both under shade or in the sun, whichever you choose. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to others. Everything is at your doorstep however you are in a quiet oasis.

Great value, we paid just 50 USD for a room with our own bathroom. Its a little further away from the nice restaurants but only by a 5 minute walk. Recommended for all visiting Kathmandu in the Thamel area.

They also provide free pick up from the airport which was most welcome and avoids the usual bun fight for the hawking taxi drivers

Room Tip: try to choose one away from the staircase. This place is for travellers and they tend to be noisy

I had the pleasure to stay with my wife in this hotel for a couple of nights before and after a Himalaya-trek in October / November 2012. We had booked this hotel online well in advance - it was recommended to us by other German travellers who had visited Nepal and Kathmandu before. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are average to good, but big enough, even when travelling with bulky luggage. The best-quality rooms are found on the hotel's top-floor. The price being abt. 25 Euros per night per room is okay. The woodwork is very beautiful, so is the nice, quiet, green garden, which is a good place to relax after spending a busy day in the city. The meals can be taken in the garden, or indoor, depending on the climatical conditions. One very good feature is that bulky baggage can be left at the hotel without extra charge during the time of a trek / mountain-trip.
I can warmly recommend this hotel to everyone, especially to those who come to Nepal for the first time... it's an oasis of peace and quietness in Nepal's busy capital!

Room Tip: Rooms at higher floors are in fact quieter, because the street noise, including the early-morning worship ceremony (starting at 4.30am local time!!) isn't heard as loud as in a room near the ground floor.

The hotel decor gives you a pretty good sense of traditional Nepali architecture. The rooms are decent and have an old world charm. There are several courtyards which provide a great place to hang out, read if you want a day away from the chaos of Thamel. The restaurant although quaint and charming lacks atmosphere. Slightly reminiscent of government guest houses, the service is poor and food is basic and not exceptional. Expect to be in the middle of trekking groups who are just passing and meet their guides and agencies to discuss further plans. A negative: Room service (restaurant again) almost never picks the phone.

Room Tip: The hotel has a good atmosphere provided you get the right room. You won't be offered the best rooms if you aren't in a group so ask to see the room before you check in. Recommend the higher floors facing the courtyard. And do opt for rooms near utility store rooms on each floor.
