I had the pleasure to stay with my wife in this hotel for a couple of nights before and after a Himalaya-trek in October / November 2012. We had booked this hotel online well in advance - it was recommended to us by other German travellers who had visited Nepal and Kathmandu before. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are average to good, but big enough, even when travelling with bulky luggage. The best-quality rooms are found on the hotel's top-floor. The price being abt. 25 Euros per night per room is okay. The woodwork is very beautiful, so is the nice, quiet, green garden, which is a good place to relax after spending a busy day in the city. The meals can be taken in the garden, or indoor, depending on the climatical conditions. One very good feature is that bulky baggage can be left at the hotel without extra charge during the time of a trek / mountain-trip.
I can warmly recommend this hotel to everyone, especially to those who come to Nepal for the first time... it's an oasis of peace and quietness in Nepal's busy capital!

Room Tip: Rooms at higher floors are in fact quieter, because the street noise, including the early-morning worship ceremony (starting at 4.30am local time!!) isn't heard as loud as in a room near the ground floor.

The hotel decor gives you a pretty good sense of traditional Nepali architecture. The rooms are decent and have an old world charm. There are several courtyards which provide a great place to hang out, read if you want a day away from the chaos of Thamel. The restaurant although quaint and charming lacks atmosphere. Slightly reminiscent of government guest houses, the service is poor and food is basic and not exceptional. Expect to be in the middle of trekking groups who are just passing and meet their guides and agencies to discuss further plans. A negative: Room service (restaurant again) almost never picks the phone.

Room Tip: The hotel has a good atmosphere provided you get the right room. You won't be offered the best rooms if you aren't in a group so ask to see the room before you check in. Recommend the higher floors facing the courtyard. And do opt for rooms near utility store rooms on each floor.

My daughter and I stayed here for 5 nights at the end of June and really enjoyed it. The price was right for about $25/night. We had a standard deluxe room which faced the garden, no air conditioning but a fan and screened windows for some fresh air. The hotel is quiet and quite pretty with beautiful woodwork. The staff is very nice. We especially like the garden, a little greenery in Kathmandu is a treat!
It is a short walk from the main tourist area and the streets are not lit at night to the hotel. It is pretty safe but we always returned to the hotel by 9:00-9:30pm.
The breakfast option is pretty standard and everything is made to order. We tried their lunch and it was very good.

International Guest House was a pleasant surprise at the end of our Nepal trip. First off, I think this is the most impressive hotel design I've seen so far at such an accessible price. It has amazing woodwork, the room we had - with TV, air conditioning and a quaint balcony- looked a bit like a museum, and so did the restaurant. The bed was also comfortable, the shower hot and the a.c. cool.
Secondly, they have the most quiet, peaceful and green garden in Kathmandu. You can spend hours there drinking milk tea and reading a book or using the wifi - as we have after a 10 hours bus ride from hell the day before.
Last but definitely not least, the food. They have room service, which is really a nice little luxury after roughing it while trekking or after a jungle safari. We ordered dessert and it was delicious. And then there is the breakfast, with 3 possible set menus. I've personally only chose the American Breakfast - a very fitting name as it contains eggs, porridge or cornflakes, toast with butter and jam, croissant, muffin and coffee or tea. It was fresh, tasty and filling.
The location is technically not Thamel, but in reality you are literally 3 minutes away from the main streets of the tourist area, and a 15 minutes walk to Durbar Square.
Usually, while visiting a new place, one spends just a short time in the hotel room, in the morning and in the evening. This is the kind of place where you can easily spend half a day resting, eating, reading or browsing the internet. After a few days or weeks in Kathmandu or the roads of Nepal, you might just need it.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony, it's very relaxing.

This is an average Kathmandu hotel in terms of room standard & cleanliness, but if you're wanting to escape a little from the Thamel frenzy, then it's a good option as it's set a little bit outside the chaos. It's just a 5 minute walk to get back into the centre of things, but the distance helps for a more uninterrupted nights sleep. The only downside to that walk is that the streets aren't lit at night, so you might feel a little uncomfortable walking back, especially if you're alone.

There are 3 breakfast options, which are included with the room rate & the hotel also offer either an airport pick-up or drop-off, but only 1 way.
