I stayed at Hotel Thamel on two separate trips to Nepal - Oct. 2010 and Feb 2011. I had a great experience each time.

Everyone who works at the hotel is very friendly and accommodating. If you need help with anything - arranging a taxi, planning a trek, etc. the staff is very willing to help. You can also arrange pickup from the airport ahead of time. It was nice arriving in Nepal at the airport and knowing there would be a ride waiting for me.

The rooms are comfortable, clean, and quiet. Modern toilets, too (I was a little worried the toilets would be squat-style). I also enjoyed the attached restaurant where you can get a nice meal for a small price.

And the location is good, too, in the heart of Thamel. You'll have access to many shops, restaurants, internet cafes, and trekking services. Although the hotel is located in a busy area, it is tucked away a bit from the hustle and bustle so you never have problems resting and relaxing inside your room.

I don't know the next time I will return to Kathmandu, but when I do, I will only book a stay at Thamel Hotel. I encourage everyone else to do the same.

The main advantage of Thamel hotel is its location: as the name says, it is in the busy Thamel district, full of shops, cafes, restaurants and tourists (which means if you are looking for the 'true' Nepal, don't book this hotel). Yet, it is surprisingly quiet. The rooms are more than basic, but it seems to be a standard of majority of Kathmandu hotels I have visited; anyway the price/quality ratio is OK. The staff is friendly and helpful.

The Hotel Thamel is located, as the name suggests, in the tourist district of Thamel, and there in the north. It is excellent for European trekkers. The reception desk can assist with booking bus tickets and tours. Even the luggage storage for several weeks is not a problem and does not cost any extra fees. All in all highly recommended.

Just a stone throne from the bustling Thamel, still peaceful. We had deluxe room in the upper floor with balcony. Nice rooftop to view the city as well.We were very happy with the location. Staff made us feel most welcome. We booked all tours through them (Everest flight, Chitwan, surroundings by car) and everything worked perfectly. well, you can probably find a bit cheaper tours, but if you want to avoid the hassle and uncertainty, I would definitely recommend to deal with these guys in the hotel. Great value for money! However, we stayed there in Dec, rooms can be chilly so be prepared for that. anyways, thank you Thamel, would stay with you again when in Kathmandu! J&P from Finland

Having visited Nepal almost every year in the last 10 years; and having lived just outside Kathmandu for 4 of those years, I have stayed at a lot of hotels in Nepal. I found Hotel Thamel to be the best low/med budget of all. Although it's in the heart of the tourist area of Thamel you couldn't hear the traffic and 'street noise' like you can in most hotels in Thamel. The staff were all exceptional, friendly and very helpful. Room cleaned every day, boiled water delivered to my room whenever I asked, good fan or A/C, free wi-fi, what more could you ask for !!

Room Tip: Rooms at front of hotel have the best view.

We have reached the hotel thamel on 05/06/2012 at 10 pm and on the same night there is a theft in three rooms,we have lost RS.12,900/-Cash from our room no.411 and in another room no. 404 the person stayed has lost 18000/- Rs. Cash plus one SONY camera worth Rs.25000/- and on fifth floor one American lady who is alone has lost Rs.2000/- plus her I PHONE from her room. There is a no security of your valuables in the hotel. The owner misbehaved with us and not ready to co-operate to us.we have filed a police complaint, but we have seen no body has sympathy with our problem. When we asked to reimburse our theft amount from our hotel bill, the owner took our family (4 couples and 8 children ) to the police station and when we request to the local police to help us they have compromised between us and the hotel owner.
We have seen that Nepal Govt. has no more interest to develop tourism. The hotel owner has to co-operate with us when we r with family and our cash has been theft from our room.Even tourism police has refused to help us.
There is a luggage room in all floors of this hotel ,and from there any one can reach your room by window and can theft any thing.
After all we all have decided not to go Nepal second time ,as there is also problem of power as well as petrol and diesel.
Kindly request to all that please shut down your window at night when you r go to sleep.

Thank you very much for your review. And thank you for staying with us. We are deeply sorry and sad for those lost of your valuable things from the room. This is the 1st time that we had expereniced in last 24 yrs.During the time of your stay 1 of the American lady also lost her I- phone and few cash but she wasn’t disappointed , instead she said to us, this was an accident so it’s not your fault but make sure you do something to prevent this things to happen in the future. And about misbehaving , that is not possible , we are in a hospitality industry since 24 yrs , we know how to deal with our clients in good times and bad .And we did compromise with you by not charging you for couple of nights.

After working out for all this time, we have now installed censored light and alarm to the back of our hotel, from where the thieve entered .When anyone passes from that certain area, our alarm gives us a huge wake up call and now , no one can dare come to our hotel from the back side.

Please call our Hotel Thamel for confirmation about the censored light and alarm or else , can check during the time of your stay.
