A very rare experience which I am glad I visited but felt rather uncomfortable throughout the visit.
We had an unasked for guide who we didnt want and who complained bitterly that my tip was too small!
There were several cremations taking place at the time of my visit and the air was redolent of scented woods used for the cremations
The sacred river was a cess pit of the detritus of Kathmandu and my one question to the unwanted guide was why surely if this place was so sacred to them why on earth did they not at least clean up the section running through the temple. He chose not to answer!

You can'tbe thereforalong time, as the smokeis quite dense during most of the day, but it's an experience not to be missed. This is different from what you see in other places like Varanasi in India, so well worth going. It's very important to be respectful and not take pictures from close up. A good guide is also very useful, as there are specific rituals that are important to know about as you watch it.

A smaller albeit more comprehendable institution then in Varanasi, this site depicts the local burial customs, gives a unique smell to the ceremony, amidst an ancient great temple setting, gorgeous complex.

If you are queemish Don't go there. Although interesting part of the Hindu culture. I felt it was too confronting and the river where they empty the ashes was filthy. 100 metre from where the ashes were tipped people were searching for "treasure" in the form of gold from jewelry and teeth

I witnessed the entire process of the Hindu cremation. I found it fascinating how the body is "processed", the way the family mourns, the idea that the ashes fall in to the Gangues and the eye candy of all the Hindu priests dressed in all their colour! If you go to Kathmandu, spend time here to appreciate the religion.
