We swapped our timeshare for a week at Gokarna. The hotel is not far from Kathmandu and is a peaceful option away from the madness of the city. The hotel room was large, but not perfectly clean with lots of dust, a wardrobe that didn't close and the water was slightly brown (maybe this is to be expected in a poor country?).

There were some mishaps with the service and the food. We had booked spa treatments prior to arrival and had received confirmation from the front desk, however on arrival at the spa they had no record. This was also the same for our return hotel transfer. One of our meals tasted strange (we think it was cooked in old oil) but it was deleted from the bill after we complained. These couple of issues aside overall the service and the food were good. Things in the resort are not as cheap as you may expect (all menu prices are net of tax), and the wine was particularly expensive.

We did a forest walk, which you must do with a guide. We were disappointed that the walk didn't include more information regarding the wildlife, plants and trees and more about the facts regarding the hotels previous life as a hunting lodge, but its worth doing to see the forest and the deer.

The above issues aside, we had a great week that combined sightseeing, walks, spa treatments, relaxing, and a mountain flight to see the Himalayas. The massage and reflexology we had were excellent. We loved sitting at the Clubhouse late in the day when the monkeys and deer would appear, a fabulous spot to enjoy a glass of wine. I also played golf 3 times, which is great value and it is an excellent course. The fairways are slightly worn, but the greens were good and its a interesting course, I'd definitely recommend it for golfers.

Kathmandu is a very poor place, very dusty, very hectic and the rubbish everywhere was awful. Do not expect too much! However there were places such as Bodnath Stupa that are kept clean and shows what can be achieved. This place is recommended for shopping and enjoying a beer on one of the roof top bars/restaurants.

So Gokarna/Kathmandu may not be perfect but its a great base away from the city but close enough to see the sites. We genuinely had a great week, but we were also ready to head home.

Was there twice in two weeks. The first time there, I was given a room that smelled like tobacco smoke. They were very willing to change my room. I got a very large room with two double beds, a sofa and a desk. Large bathroom, hot shower with fragrant soaps. The lighting is rather dim despite several lamps. The rooms do not have wifi. Wifi is located in the bar area only. It works intermittently.
The second time there, I got a very large room similar to the first. This time the room did not appear to have been cleaned very well. The bathroom counters had water and soap stains. That being said, the AC works great, especially since the temperature was about 100 degrees outside.
Breakfast buffet is excellent. The restaurants on the property were all good. I had a wonderful massage at the spa. They have several "types" of massage, ie golfers massage, Himalayan Mama, Ayurvedic, etc but in reality, they are all exactly the same.
The resort is in a great location on the outskirts of Kathmandu, far from the dust and noise of the city. I recommend the property and would go there again.

This is the right place if one needs a break from the crowd while still being in crowded Kathmandu. The rooms are large and well appointed, the gardens are gorgeous. I particularly liked the heated swimming pool and the spa, had a massage and sauna. Food could be better, only breakfast is really up the standard.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the back with jungle view

This is a very good place to relax and unwind -the pool, spa and the massages !!! appreciated ++especially after Kathmandu- The staff are very professional and friendly, loved the food!! The grounds were great to explore and remember to take time out to sit in the temple.

Gokarna Forest Resort is good. It is actually very good when you come here after spending hours in Kathmandu traffic jams. A lot of activities in the hotel itself and quite a large territory. Tasty food in 3 restaurants (we didn't like a lot the experience in the most expensive - Nepalese one, but the Thai-Chienese is great). Highly recommended
