“Great Place to be your Home Base while on the Kathmandu Rim”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

Great resort - wonderful surroundings. A very peaceful, quiet and relaxing retreat following a day of trekking or just seeing the sights in Kathmandu. Restaurant in the hotel has a very varied menu, fit for all tastes. I was just there on a very short visit to Nepal, since I work in the UAE, couldn't miss the opportunity of the lifetime. Was referred to the Gokarna Forest Resort and so happy I was. For a first time visitor to the area, plus being an old, typical spoiled American who needs some creature comforts, this spot had it all. While the trip from the airport was very bumpy (the roads are truly part of the adventure of the visit), getting to the resort made you forget anything negative of the trip. The staff is exceptional, in particular I have to single out Lasta (rhymes with pasta she told me) - she helped me with everything I needed and more so. Being a Parkinson's patient has it's own challenges, but Lasta, along with the rest of the staff, were very accommodating and thoroughly helpful. And the bed was big enough for my 6'6" frame. I can't endorse this place enough. You will not be disappointed. Except I didn't see any monkeys who you are warned about by keeping your windows closed. Thank you everyone at Gokarna!

Friendly staff and excellent service, sizeable room and a pleasurable stay. My luggage was delayed on the flight from Qatar to Kathmandu and the hotel staff had no prolems picking it up for me from the airport when it arrived. Internet/WIFI problems were attended by at least three staffmembers, and although not solved, their assistance was remarkable. Overall, the stay was very pleasurable, and although I have not tried any of the amenities (spa, golf, horseback riding) I would recommend this hotel especially for business travellers for its proximity to the airport and some important sites in the city.

Room Tip: Stay away from the condo's that have monkey problems.

It was a short but memorable trip to Kathmandu and staying at Gokarna Forest Resort. The place is excellent with very good rooms and the serivce and food has been also very good. The pick from airport and back was without any hurdles and the prices were also comfortable enough.

It is worth staying at this hotel for true relaxation, and for religious people a small but neatly maintained Sai Mandir and a Ganpati Idol are there which will give us entire relaxation and peace of mind.

Well done, recommended to stay.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny

We have been to Kathmandou several times and although Gokarna has been the most expensive hotel we've stayed in it has by far been the best. The biggest advantage of staying here is that the hotel is effectively in a forest (the forest where Nepale nobility used to hunt). Therefore it's one of the few areas close to Kathmandou city which is calm and peaceful. We appreciated this after many a day travelling around (let's face it) a dusty and dirty Kathmandou. You welcome coming back to this oasis of peace and sitting in the hotel gardens and having your evening drink and then ordering the very good traditional Nepale cuisine.

If you're a golfer this is certainly the place to be. There is an 18 hole gold course which is part of the hotel. I played with one of the course pros and had a very enjoyable round on this well looked after golf course (have included some photos). It's the first time I've played on a course and seen monkeys and deer ambling around fairways and roughs! I believe this is the only 18 hole course in Nepal. There is a 9 hole course in the city but it doesn't look great.

We went with our children and were very happy to be able to use the hotel (indoor) swimming pool with them. It's a good size pool and this area of the hotel also offers steam rooms, a gym and fantastic traditional massages. I had several massages and can only say they were amongst the best I've ever had and very reasonably priced. Tip: ask for the oil & hot stone massage, it is amaaaaazing!

What else is there to so about the Gokarna..... well the attention you get from the staff is fantastic. To be fair though you would expect this from most Nepalese hotels as they really are supremely welcoming and kind. What's nice about the Gokarna staff is that they can be quite informal too if you want them to be. They loved playing with our children and were always interested in hearing about our day's adventures.

Another good thing about the Gokarna is that you can spend a whole day at the hotel and never feel that you need to 'get out' (which we have felt ve've had to do at other hotels). There's enough to do in the hotel or in the grounds of the hotel. Other than swimming and golf you can also take longs walks in the forest / jungle. You will see a lot of monkeys, deers, parrots and much else.

I've added a selection of photos.... could have added more but didn't want to show my children and hotel staff to the world!!

All in all, I will just say, you can be guaranteed to wonderful time at this hotel!! Thank you Gokarna for our fabulous time last April & see you next April!!

Room Tip: Try to get a room that has a view onto their beautiful gardens.

This is a wonderful place to stay if you are on a budget or otherwise. We stayed here for 10 days and were greeted by the most wonderful and attentive staff who took care of our every need. We couldn't have asked for more. Watch out for those monkeys at breakfast - they tried to take my phone! The guards around the property have a mean shot with their catapults. The spa is wonderful although men and women are separated. My partner and I had a joint massage and it was one of the best massages I have ever had. Lots of activities to do and taxis to and from the hotel are affordable although there are local buses nearby. Just loved our stay, great breakfast, beautiful gardens and outdoor seating and our room was heavenly with a sunken bath and plenty of space. Limited good advice on travelling around Nepal, ie travel agents inside the hotel were well overpriced and gave limited advice, but we found this to be a problem at every hotel we went to.

I stayed at Gokarna Forest Resort when I went to Nepal for a Consultation on Food Rights. This was such a beautiful place and it made me feel so comfortable and even reduced the stress that I was having about the consultation.

We were picked up from the hotel at the airport and they were prompt and on time and the driver they sent was good in English and courteous. When we reached the hotel we were welcomes in warmth which was not second to any Royal welcome. We were promptly directed to our rooms. That evening we had a leisurely walk around the premises and came across the Harmony Spa which was true to its name. An ayurvedic massage in the spa is something that you should not miss. For the in house guests, the steam baths, sauna facilities, morning yoga sessions, the use of the gym are all given free of charge and these amenities ought not to be missed by the guests at all!!!

The breakfast menu of the hotel needs improvement especially if you are a vegetarian. However, the service was very good and the stewards were very friendly. The conference rooms are average and the noise of the Air Conditioner was very loud and thereby disturbed some of the conversations that the participants of the consultation wanted to have. This aspect of this resort needs improvement.

As this resort is situated in the midst of the forest, you might want to take a walk in the forest. However, you are not permitted to go without a guide and for that, you are required to make a payment. The forest is full of leeches and you might want to be on your guard if you venture in to the forest. My husband and I wanted to do a two hour tour in the forest and had to cut it down to one hour because of the leeches.

The view that we had from our room was that of a couple of deer who were so friendly. There is a monkey problem as the hotel is situated in the midst of the forest. However, if the guests are careful enough to follow the guidelines given by the hotel, there will be no problem at all and the stay would be as smooth as silk.

If you want to do shopping, this resort might not be the best idea as it is quite far from the Thamel which is considered as the tourist shopping area. If you want to travel to the city everyday from the Gokarna resort you might have to pay Rs 800/- one way. However, this is one of the most beautiful resorts that I have visited and if I go to Nepal again, I would most definitely be staying here!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard with deer or the forest are very nice.
