Though this place has a lot of pubs, restaurants and dance bars, it feels that you’re perhaps in a shady, dark street full of pimps waiting to get you inside their bars. The food is below average and the shops are just fine. Nothing great.

Delightfully chaotic is an oxymoron but you will have great delight and fun in the chaos of Thamel. with its mingling crowd, hawkers, fascinating buildings often in decay, myriads of shops selling everything , the tangled web of electricity lines that line the streets like a jungle of wires and the people best of all that vary from the scruffy to the well groomed. Watch the bicycle and motor bike traffic and enjoy what is classic Kathmandu. It can get dusty so take a face mask if you have allergies but whatever enjoy the people as they go about their daily routine. You will find you make friends as you walk the streets and watch for the occasional cow and the many dogs that sleep around.

The main tourist area is Thamel, be sure and bargain starting at half the price quoted and work your way to some compromise. The less expensive area is New Road but the variety is in Thamel and the best choices will be found here. You can buy travel luggage to trinkets to Nepali handicrafts. Whats popular are the handmade knives but be sure and find credible sellers.Be sure and stop at Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel to get a cold beer and some western food if you are craving for some.

Thamel is a great hub to begin your adventure. The restaurants are plentiful and shopping is unlimited.

If you are from Europe and with to bring home souvenirs and useful gifts to friends and family this is the place to find the biggest selection of shops and good prices. Add to this that there is plenty of life to watch in the streets and the many restaurants. Watch out for scooters and cars, and also bike rickshaws which you can use to take you back to your hotel if you are up a little excitement.

A must visit place... This is a dine and shop area where you can find traditional items and the items that are required for trekking and hiking... You can find almost everything here that you require during the stay of yours in Kathmandu...

This is definitely the area to stay in Kathmandu especially for trekkers and climbers. Lots of fake and really trekking shops available and plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Nice vibe

On your way to Thamel, make sure to look up in the trees. FruIt gets make their home here and they hang upside down during the day. Thamel is a shopping delight. Trek shops, clothes, food, shoes, handbags, pashminas and souvenirs are available for purchase. You can hire a rickshaw if you get tired, Do bargain but not too hard. It is usually one bargain and they are done. They are not hard sales.
