Thamel is a good place to stay in hotels, because it is a good gateway to get trips and catch local transport.

in the small streets of Thamel, you can find everything you want. For shoppers, food and drinks. A lot of tourists of course. You can find all the trekking gear you need.

Definitely a tourist mecca. Everything available at some ridiculously cheap prices.
Many name brands are knockoffs however there is some quality if you look for it.
Plenty of places to eat and rest. Many food places cater for Western tastes if you are not into local cuisine. Loads of souvenir shops but only some are willing to haggle. Only down side is persistent hawkers who will follow and hassle you to purchase their goods.
They are persistent so you must be firm. Avoid eye contact and keep walking. Manners seem to be a sign of weakness and they will persist.

Though this place has a lot of pubs, restaurants and dance bars, it feels that you’re perhaps in a shady, dark street full of pimps waiting to get you inside their bars. The food is below average and the shops are just fine. Nothing great.

Delightfully chaotic is an oxymoron but you will have great delight and fun in the chaos of Thamel. with its mingling crowd, hawkers, fascinating buildings often in decay, myriads of shops selling everything , the tangled web of electricity lines that line the streets like a jungle of wires and the people best of all that vary from the scruffy to the well groomed. Watch the bicycle and motor bike traffic and enjoy what is classic Kathmandu. It can get dusty so take a face mask if you have allergies but whatever enjoy the people as they go about their daily routine. You will find you make friends as you walk the streets and watch for the occasional cow and the many dogs that sleep around.

Amazing sights and unbelievably beautiful Architecture! A must see bucket list place to come. Like stepping back in time.
The buildings are being under restorative care currently.
Every where you look you see a photo to be taken.

The main tourist area is Thamel, be sure and bargain starting at half the price quoted and work your way to some compromise. The less expensive area is New Road but the variety is in Thamel and the best choices will be found here. You can buy travel luggage to trinkets to Nepali handicrafts. Whats popular are the handmade knives but be sure and find credible sellers.Be sure and stop at Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel to get a cold beer and some western food if you are craving for some.
