“Chaotic, crowded & mad!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

Thamel is the tourist centre of Kathmandu and all life is here in its narrow, crowded chaos. If you don't mind crowds, motor scooters coming at you from all angles coupled with the constant gentle badgering from shop owners there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants packed into the area. Be prepared to haggle - or to be ripped off. Never accept the first price. But the atmosphere, even after dark, is non threatening.

“Thamel- tourist hub of Kathmandu”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

Thamel was our anchor point during a month of trekking in Nepal, April 2013. To say that it is busy and interesting is to understate it. Its narrow streets are a hive of activity with pedestrians, cars, small trucks and motor bikes all sharing the roadways. It's full of shops for hiking gear, t-shirts (printed) and embroidered; the latter will embroider whatever you want on a t-shirt for less than a printed t-shirt in most other tourist locations. You have to bargain for most things, and the shop keepers are generally good humoured about it. There are restaurants serving every kind of food you can imagine, ranging from local Nepali & Newari to Mexican and Japanese. Often one restaurant will serve multiple kinds of food, for example chow mein and pizza. Generally speaking the food is very good to excellent.

Changing money was easy because there are exchange shops everywhere with their rates outside. They do not charge an extra commission, so you get the same rate whether you change $100 or $10.

We felt safe walking in Thamel in daylight as well as in the evening. I didn't hear of any tourist that had their pockets picked or backpacks entered during the several days that we stayed there.

The junction of tourists, thamel is known for its presence of the fusion of the tourists and the locals. The place that is always happening. This place is focused on tourists and there are different things like crafts, arts, foods, culture and events available there.
