Thamel - manic, busy, colourful. Rows of shops all selling similar gear. We stayed on the doorstep and dipped in on a couple of occaisions so we were lucky we didn't have to do it all at once. A good street map is essential. Beware and ignore drug dealers they6 can be pretty persistent even when you are in your mid fifties!

Thamel is touristy, yes. And yes, at night it can be a bit sketchy (but not unsafe). However, for a wide selection of shopping and dining, it's a must. There are also plenty of hotels in the surrounding area.

In Thamel you find shops, shops and shops - beautiful pashmina, local craft and lots of (unoriginal) trekking equipment. We liked it.

This place is terrible. It's essentially a cesspool of aggressive vendors preying on tourists. I honestly don't understand why so many people/books recommended it - You may as well be at an outdoor mall in the states, as the only things to do there are shop and eat. Expensively. With the lowest quality of product in Kathmandu. Ugh. Ask for New Road if you want to shop, it's the same thing without the corruption - you know, where the locals go.

Heavily congested and noisy, but in the heart of Kathmandu. A good place to shop or enjoy a meal. Lots to see and experience.
