“the poorer man's Crowne Plaza”
Reviewed February 15, 2012

We spent four nights in February 2012 at Grand Hotel. The hotel sits on a very busy side street just a block away from Soaltree Crowne Plaza. With its 8 floors, It makes much of it's being the tallest structure (some time ago) in the Valley. There are three mom-and-pop convenience stores in front and beside it so if you're looking for inexpensive wine or bottled water, it really is convenient. But that's about it. They have only two hotel vehicles - a large coaster to carry 15 or so to a site, and a very small - and old - van that probably seats 2 plus plus luggage. The lobby is sufficient for meeting guests and guides. Breakfast is poor, for a tourist used to his toast and sausages and hams and bacons. The strong impression you get is that there aren't enough staff for the number of guests. One example - a guest had thrown up near the elevator. No one cleaned up the mess until two hours later - they only put up a "be careful" sign. All our companions complained that the central heater-ac system didn't seem to work - it was cold despite putting up the heater to 30. Hot water was reliable. The rooms were decently-sized but the beds were on the hard side and lumpy. Towels were thin and threadbare. It's a workable hotel - if you have to do business close by. But I'd avoid otherwise.

We stayed 3 nights here after a 16 nt Rajasthan tour. The hotel was fine, better than some in India. However, we ate in the top floor restaurant the 1st night and, although the food was good, there was a distinct lack of atmosphere. Breakfast was ok. We were displaced on the Sunday morning from the ground floor breakfast room as there had been a large private party in there the previous night. They also had a private breakfast! The bedroom was ok, usual toiletries, tea and "coffee" sachets. The bed was very comfy; much appreciated after the very hard mattresses in India. Nearly forgot, there were one or two dead cockroaches around......

On our 3rd evening we ate in the city centre and grabbed a taxi back. The taxi ride from hell! No rear seatbelts and almost no rear seats. The driver kept switching his lights on and off. Since the other drivers did the same and there are no street lights, it made for an interesting white knuckle ride. We nearly scored one dog, one pedestrian, several motor bikes and many cars.

If you need it, there are a few local shops opposite plus tourist shops but the main centre is a good few minutes by taxi!!

Stayed as part of a VJV tour. Found the hotel very comfortable and clean, with none of the horrors reported by some reviewers. The weather was cool and the pool was closed for the season. Breakfasts good and the ground floor restaurant was quite adequate for an evening meal - my partner even had a real beefburger. No sign of the tea lounge promised on the website. But the hotel is some way out of town. You can walk to the Crowne Plaza nearby but for everywhere else you need transport, and Kathmandu is so congested that journeys tend to take a long time.

Already concerned about the reviews of this hotel we booked ourselves at the Crowne Plaza just in case...best decision we ever made....arrived weary and tired from Lhasa TIbet.....check in was efficient but the state of the room was dreadful. One of the two beds had been slept in and there was a bootprint half way up the wall in the bathroom opposite the toilet - say no more.....we were in room 4. Promptly upped and moved to the Crowne Plaza....best move ever, now that is a proper hotel!! We had expected to suffer some lower star hotels but this one was appalling. Only decent thing on offer was breakfast...we joined our fellow travellers in the mornings before our tours and the breakfast was pretty good although the service and cleanliness of the china left something to be desired!

Room Tip: Don't do it....pay the extra and stay elsewhere

The Hotel is one of the best Hotels we have ever stayed. The rooms are luxurious with centrally
Air conditioning and with all modern amenities and facilities. The DIning hall is situated at Ground floor and offered Mouth watering dishes, soups and Desserts. The only disadvantage is that the reception is not traveller friendly because when we had to check out we requested them we will wait till our Vehicle arrives for Airport drop. But they were impatient and asking frequently that when we'll leave.

Stayed here for 4 nights in October and the whole set up was average, rooms had basic level of comfort & cleanliness, breakfast was OK, the Indian restaurant on the 8th floor however was excellent and thoroughly recommended. The swimming pool area is in dire need of cleaning up and someone in our party had money taken from the safety deposit box.

Forget the recent rave review, and forget the totally negative reviews, both possibly part of what seems to be a war of words in Kathmandu. This genuine traveller with VJV in October 2011 found this an adequate hotel, no better, no worse. It needs money spent on it, the swimming pool is a laugh, but it serves its purpose of a decent place to sleep when visiting Nepal. Breakfast is nice enough, some of our group rated it good for the evening, but we took the advice of others and went next door to the Crown Plaza (5 mins walk) for some really good food. You can also buy some cheaper drinks (eg tonic) from the small shops opposite.
Noises from next door or up/downstairs do carry worse than in some newer hotels.
And when in Kathmandu give yourself a truly indulgent treat - an expensive meal at the utterly amazing Dwarika's. You will never forget it!
