Shree Lal is absolutely fantastic. Compared to other places in KTM (and Thamel in particular), it's clean, quiet at night, no mosquito issues, excellent and helpful staff, and just an all-around winner. Great rooftop hangout spot and little vegetarian restaurant downstairs, along with two computers with internet access for free to those staying at the inn. The dormitory is split into two four-bed sections, and as of May 2013 it's 200 rupees a night. Good deal. I haven't stayed in the other room types, but I've heard they are good, with the added benefit of privacy. The showers are warm sometimes, but rarely early in the mornings. Small price to pay. Definitely try this place out on your next visit.

Room Tip: All rooms sound nice. The dorm is cheap and I had no problem with anything.

This is the second time we are staying here now and we don't even consider other places in Katmandu. We eat 9/10 meals here at the restaurant since it's among the best food you can find around here. Try the paneer butter masala with paratha - delicious. And keep in mind - I love meat over all and still rather eat the veg. food here than a steak anywhere else. For proteinjunkees, like myself, paneer is cottage cheese so as good as meat when it comes to amino acids. The staff is AMAZING and will help you with everything - special thanks to the girl owner who is super nice. Rooms are not fantastic to be honest. But they keep improving all the time and they just took over the ownership from another owner who left some stuff in terrible shape. But for the price it is great. I can't but recommend this place to everyone! GREAT!

Room Tip: I think you should try the higher rooms since it gets pretty noisy during evenings the further down...

Stayed a few days there, both in the dorms and in a room which were clean and price worthy.
The main attraction is definitely the restaurant, serving the best Thali meal I've had in Nepal and also other excellent&cheap dishes, and the staff - very warm and helpful. Though electricity comes and goes (like most places in this city) - wifi was always available.

Even if you're staying somewhere else - check out the restaurant.

I stayed in the dorm and although it's probably the cheapest place in town, it was incredibly loud at night sometimes: people coming at 1 am singing, people banging in the door of a room nearby, loud ringing noise in the stairway, kitchen noise at 5:30 am... You name it.

On the plus side: unbeatable price, very friendly staff and backpacker crowd, sunset on the roof terrace, vegetarian food restaurant, relaxing music, free Internet.

Don't expect much sleep though ;)

Room Tip: Take a private room, not the dorm.

In my 11 days of stay in Kathmandu I visited this restaurant 8 times...the husband and wife run inn and restaurant is the place to dine for all vegetarians. There are other vegans nearby but none to beat this. Friendly staff, good atmosphere, free WiFi and tasty food are the pluses. Met plenty of people from around the world at this restaurant. If you visit this place say Hi to Mr. Das and Mrs. Shanti Das for me.

I stayed at Shree Lal inn twice, for two days either side of my Annurpurna circuit trek. My visits made my trip. The food is outstanding, by far the best food I ate in Nepal. The staff and manager, were a delight and went out of there way to be helpful and guide me through any problems I had. They have a large selection of rooms from 4 bed dorms upward with a peaceful rooftop garden. Well worth a visit. Simon Clissold.
