Great location, price, and fanatstic service! I usually stay at large chain hotels in this part of the world, but Royal Penguin had such nice write ups I decided to give it a shot--Glad I did. Not only was the location perfect but the room was large, clean and bright. My girlfriend literally giggled with delight when she saw the room. I was concerned that a "boutique" hotel would not be able to help me plan some side trips--opposite--they really went out of there way to set up 5 days worth of travel around Nepal. They also set up fight to see Everest, a must see. So the free included breakfast is a choice of 4 very nice pre-set meals. Very good. (Only meals i ate there). You can request different stuffed animals as your table guest. The location is right in the heart of action, but quite from street noise. The staff was beyond helpful and charming. Not only did they set up Everest and Monkey temple trip. But I had a few free days, so the awesome manager Kunchhang Lama set us up with a driver and hotel stays in Pokhara, with guide, than on to Chitwan National park, total of 3 nights, what service!! So here is the kicker, we returned to Kathmandu in early afternoon, our flight was not till evening. We went back to Royal Penguin to store our luggage for a few hours and Kunchhang offered us a room for a few hours to shower and change--NO CHARGE--wow. They really know how to treat there guest, even after they check out. Now remember this is a boutique hotel, it does not have a huge grand lobby, it does not have an elevator, and there is a 3% charge if you pay with a credit card (price is so low cash is easy). Gym gets the job done. They are opening a Royal Penguin 2 with an elevator and more amenities, but I was so pleased i would not stay anywhere else. And did I mention the price is really good. Stay here when in Kathmandu!

I had the pleasure of stying 2night in this lovely hotel (Royal Penguin 1)

Nice and clean room.
Extremly warm, helpful and friendly staf!!!
The location is great at the quiet side of center Thamel (although there is slight noise from the street...) but in general, good hotel and I warmly recommend it.

Special thanks to the reception smily team!!

Soon they will open the 2nd hotel near by and I hope it will be even better.

Enjoy Nepal

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in total: 1 night on arrival to Kathmandu and 1 before departure. Rooms were very nice, breakfast was included in the price and was good. Dinner was really good, loved chicken Mo-Mo (traditional Nepalese dumplings). Hotel has a small gym with 1 running machine (treadmill), 1 bike and 1 elliptical trainer plus I think there were some weights as well. Staff were all very helpful. We were able to exchange dollars into Nepalese currency although on checkout couldn't change the leftovers back to dollars, had to do it in airport which worked out much better actually. We travelled from India to Kathmandu then back to India so had some Indian currency with us on departure from Kathmandu - we were told at airport that Indian currency is not allowed and airport staff didn't want to let us through but in the end they did...if you have some Indian currency make sure you put it in the bag, don't leave it in your pockets as you may be searched. There maybe some limit of how much is allowed, we had just a little over 10k rupees which is only about $100. Back to the hotel review - when we booked a taxi to go to airport staff forgot to tell us that the main road to airport would be blocked due to Shivaratri festival and it will take longer to get there so make sure you ask if they are aware of anything that could cause delay.

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Kathmandu, made even more special with our stay at the Royal Penguin. The warmth and friendliness of the staff was on display as soon as we walked through the door. Our room was spacious and here's that word again 'unique', and very comfortable. All the amenities including wi fi are there. Close to all the main tourist attractions of the area, the hotel also offers great food in the restaurant. Special thanks must go to the manager Kunchhang Lama, who helped us plan and book our various outings including a special surprise birthday dinner for my wife. Unforgettable. We will definitely be back for another visit.

Room Tip: We stayed in an executive suite on the 3rd floor. A few extra stairs to climb, but quieter. Think of...

We stayed here for three nights in February 2014, and we were pleased that the hotel had a great central location, which allowed us to explore Thamel on foot. This is the main tourist area of KTM, with loads of shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep. The hotel is modern and the rooms are funky and cool, with very comfy beds and great bathrooms. Big flat screen telly with a surprisingly large choice of channels, tea and coffee and so forth. In the lobby there is a coffee shop and restaurant, and the breakfast is pretty good. The staff are absolutely fantastic, courteous, polite, friendly, and helpful. English is not brilliant in this city, so the smiling faces make up for what can be lost in translation. Free WiFi makes it a good choice all round.

Room Tip: Get a room on the back if you can, its a bit quieter.

The Royal Penguin is a great little hotel on the southern tip of Thamel, positioned conveniently between the masses of shops, restaurants, etc, of the tourist district, and the colorful streets and temples around Asan Tole, with Durbar Square about a 15 minute walk away; I thought the location was a perfect base for exploring Kathmandu.
The rooms are a good size- not huge but very comfortable, very clean and modern, with lots of quirky features and installations. The latter is evident throughout the entire hotel- loads of fun, vibrant décor full of unique character.
The restaurant has a varied menu including a range of international dishes as well as traditional Nepali cuisine, and when I ate here the food was very good- they also cooked late for me one night when I lost track of time and everywhere else was shut, which I appreciated! It also serves a nice range of fully inclusive breakfast dishes. There is a decent roof garden to sit and have a beer in- the views aren't amazing, but I'm pretty sure that is the case for most places in Thamel!
The power goes off occasionally but that's par for the course in Nepal and the back-up generator always seemed to kick in quickly.
The hotel staff are great- all very friendly and extremely helpful, and all spoke very good English which was handy as (embarrassingly) I only managed to master a few words of Nepali!
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay and I would definitely recommend it.

Hard to find fault with this hotel. Location is perfect, on the edge of Thamel and easy walk to Durbar Square. My room was spacious and comfortable and contained everything one could wish for..The staff throughout were friendly and efficient and the manager, Kunchang Lama, went out of his way to make my stay as pleasant as possible. A wide choice of excellent breakfasts is served all day. Strongly recommended and it might be worth keeping an eye open for RPB Hotel mark due to open shortly 50 yards away!

Room Tip: i had an executive suite no 13, which was great. Be prepared for quirky decor!
