“Excellent and peaceful hotel”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

We spent three times two nights at the Shambaling hotel last November, in deluxe and suite room.
It was a wonderful and unforgettable stay.
The location is just perfect, ten minutes’ walk from the Boudha stupa, the room are well decorated in a Tibetan style, very clean and very comfortable with a special lemongrass touch. The garden is very pleasant and peaceful. The food is excellent and having your meals outside is just delightful.
A special thanks to the staff, especially at the front desk, very kind and helpful.
Our next stay in Kathmandu will be at the Shambaling.

All my best greetings to the Shambaling staff.

We recently stayed at the Shambaling hotel for 4 nights after a walking holiday in the hills. It is an oasis of calm in the frenetic busyness of Kathmandu. The staff, room, meals etc were all first class and we really enjoyed our stay here. Several taxi drivers found it difficult to find - however you can pick up a card with a map on it at reception which proved very useful. Being within short walking distance of the Boudinath Stupa was a big advantage. The hotel will give you a walking map to view this magnificent temple.

This was the star of our time in Nepal. Everything about this little hotel worked and we wished we had stayed even longer. This one is a gem! Only complaint is there is no wifi in the rooms. Food was very good.

Room Tip: We had upstairs rooms that overlooked the lovely garden.

The biz schedule shows me some action in Doha/Qatar and this might be a good chance to fly somewhere else prior returning to the homebase in Europe.
Arrival on Qatar with superb weather conditions, just a few clouds, blue sky, in the late morning.
A transit visa up on arrival at 5 US-Dollars only is possible when you stay one night only in Nepal.
Lucky me, no other international flight at the same time, not a minute to wait and I´am faster than the really nice young guy from the hotel to pick me up.
I was in contact by mail with the hotel and the response to manage the pick up was swift, well done.
Just some minutes thereafter at the hotel with one more really nice welcome from the young woman at the desk,.
My room is prepared, upper floor as requested.
The room facing the garden, quiet, wooden floor and furniture, large and spacious with a separate seating area and two chairs. Also the bathroom large with a shower cabin.
Everything works well.
Just some five minutes to walk from the hotel is the UNESCO world heritage site Boudhanath Stupa.
The place to go now and catch some tibetian impressions.
Such a nice place, a thousand of people around, tibetian music, I love it.
Durbar Square in the afternoon, also really impressive and back again later for the hotel.
The fare by taxi is around 500 rupees.
A real good nights sleep, simply no noise to notice and up pretty early. To early for breakfast, but a breakfast box is prepared.
The driver is ready as ordered, not that much traffic this time of the day, good.
And at the airport to pass several checks till finally the check-in and to fly out with perfect clear blue sky and marvellous views to the big mountains around on Turkish Airlines for Istanbul,
all in a really nice place to stay in chaotic, just from a westerners point of view, Kathmandu.
What about the usual questions for the downsides?:
Prepare yourself for a tough experience to reach the hotel on the road, a complete construction site where it´s close to unbelievable that there are not more tyre punctures,
but it´s worth it!.

The memory of my 8 day stay at the Shambaling hotel happily lingers and I am not surprised to be joining a chorus of those singing the praises of this special place near the Boudha stupa. I enjoyed every moment of my stay, from the moment I was greeted with a Khata until the day I departed. The level of kindness and hospitality offered by each and every member of the hotel staff is a major reason why this hotel is quickly rising to the #1 place to stay in Kathmandu. Another is the location near the Boudha Stupa which offers enjoyable walks free from most cars as well as up to the beautiful Kopan Monastery. I also arranged a Tibetan community visit with Yeshi that I highly recommend. I will definitely be back!

Spent 4 nights at the Shambaling hotel in mid October. Loved it. Was the perfect break after trekking. Great location near the Stupa just a short comfortable walk away. Big, pristine and quiet rooms. Amazing and helpful staff. Restaurant was great. Solid little buffet for breakfast and no misses on any of the other meals during my stay. Really appreciated the boxed breakfast for my early am flight.
Big thanks to all the staff.
