“Great hotel in busy Katmandu”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Great place to rest your head in busy Katmandu. We spent 2 nights here and we were very happy. The place is relatively new, we were told it had only been open for 6 months whilst we were there. The reception and the service throughout our stay was excellent, the staff were always helpful and friendly, whether it was to give directions or a friendly chat. The rooms were simple, clean and very comfortable. The hotel has bags of charm, was well decorated, in keeping with the character of the country.

On the downside, the food in the restaurant was average, the Wi-Fi reception pretty weak and only available in the lobby area (at time of writing). The rooms were cold at night, although electric blankets are provided. The communal spaces are limited, so if you want to hang with friends it’s either the pretty garden or the relatively small restaurant. And after sun down the hotel goes quiet, not too much to do in the evenings, but that's the same for much of Kathmandu.

Would I stay here again, absolutely, it's a lovely hotel. Well priced and good value for money. Once you get behind the metal entrance gates it's a real oasis in this busy city

I stayed at the Shambaling Hotel because of the good reviews from this forum and I was not disappointed. It suited my purpose, which was to see the Stupa and relax after trekking and a busy stay in Thamel it ticked all the boxes for me. The staff were exceptionally helpful and caring and I felt like I was staying in a big house. There is not much to see in Boudha besides the Stupa and Pashupatinath, but that was my intention. My room was clean quiet and comfortable. Wifi worked as much as I needed it to and the restaurent was superb, again service exceptional.
For me it was a perfect end to a perfect trip. The airport is only ten minutes or so and it is a calm way to leave the country after the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu proper.

Room Tip: Garden facing would be preferable. Make sure you go up to the rooftop

I have just finished my stay here of 4 nights. Overall, I found this place to be a fantastic place to stay. It is very clean and bright with a lovely garden courtyard to relax in. What really sets this place apart though is the staff. The all are fantastic, and I do not say this lightly. They always had a welcoming smile, but they also all had the desire to go the extra mile. A couple of examples: the cleaning staff during the day even folded and left in a neat pile my clothes that I had sloppily left, also the waitress at breakfast time recognised that i was really hanging out for my coffee one morning, so the next day when she brought the menu to me she already had a pot of coffee ready for me. These examples may seem small, but they are representative of the entire staff.

The food there is fantastic, especially the breakfast. However it is a bit on the pricey side...but you really do get quality.

As other people have pointed out, the location is out of the way. This is a double edged sword. It is quiet (for Kathmandu), but is a little difficult to get to for taxi drivers. Once I knew the way from Boudnath Stupa this was not much of an issue. The neighbourhood dogs can make a bit of noise at times, but for me it was never a major issue, just an occasional annoyance.

I think in many, many ways staying in the Boudnath area is a far more enjoyable experience that the well known Thamel area. The Shambaling should be first on your list of places to stay. Oh, I have just transferred to another hotel to join a Tibet tour. This other hotel is a well known chain in Lazimpat, and I gotta say it really feels like a step down from the Shambaling.

We stayed at the Shambaling for 6 days, and had a great stay at the hotel, it didn't feel like a hotel, in the sense that it appeared to be one huge house with 3 floors. The suite room was very spacious, clean, quiet, ( you will hear dogs barking at night ) and facing the garden. As we were leaving the airport building , there was a Taxi Service desk, ( it probably costs a couple of dollars extra ) and from there, our driver had no problem finding the hotel.

For us, the location was great as it was close to the Boudhanath Stupa, and we really enjoyed our morning walks to the Stupa.

The staff were very helpful, the food at the restaurant was good, and overall, just a nice place to chill from the hustle an bustle of Kathmandu. Wi-fi, in the room was almost no existent, but in the lobby, or next to the stair case worked fine, but probably slower than what you are used to.

Room Tip: A room facing the garden if possible,

Thank you for taking the time to write you review, we really appreciate it. We are very happy to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and being close to Boudhnath is and advantage for you. I understand, it's lovely place to visit and visit again if you have time.
Internet connections are normally very slow in Nepal, we are already working on having a faster speed internet (wi-fi). Thank you for your feed back.
We look forward to welcome you at Shambaling again.

I agree with both John N (May 6, 2013) and Coorong (May 8, 2013) about all the good things at this hotel -- a real pleasure to stay at. However, I think guests need to be forewarned that it is located on an unmarked dirt road that is dusty, rock-strewn and can be hard for cab drivers to find. Other than going to the nearby magnificent Bodnath Stupa on foot, sight-seeing requires cab service that can be bone-jolting and nerve-wracking. Given how nice the hotel and staff are, and how quiet the premises are (except for occasional dog-barking, as is true everywhere in Kathmandu), the trade-off was worth it for me. But I think it's helpful for other guests to know this in advance. Tip: On the small map located on the reverse of the hotel's business card, be sure to have a staff member write the name of the statue located at the turn off point from the main road. This will help taxi drivers find the hotel.

Thank you very much for your review and we are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and liked the quietness and peaceful ambiance of Shambaling. It's true with the road, most of the road in Kathmandu are very bad and same is with the way to our Hotel. Kathmandu at this time is going under major road expansion and road construction work, we are hoping to have better road in Kathmandu soon.
Baoudhanath is a beautiful palce to visit as it is only 7 minutes walk from Shabaling and our guest have visited baoudh stupa repeatedly during their stay as the stupa is so peaceful with restaurants and shoppings as well.
Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to welcome you at Shambaling in future.

I only spent one night here but enjoyed my stay. Other TA posts have already talked about the staff- they were very helpful and welcoming. I arranged for an airport pick up that was a really good move. My room was spacious, quiet and well decorated in traditional nepali style. I enjoyed my vegetarian thali dinner and the breakfast the next morning.

it was great to be able to take the recommended walk (from my airport guide) to the Bouda stupa and enjoy the spectacle of the people who come to pray amid the tourists. i really felt likeI was part of the Nepalese culture rather than just a tourist.

being a bit out of the way meant a longer trip from the airport and into the centre, but the trade off was being really peaceful. The free wifi was a bit intermittent- no a big issue though.

Room Tip: i went for a deluxe room that overlooked the garden
