Nirvana Garden Hotel
Ranked #112 of 205 Hotels in Kathmandu
Reviewed December 24, 2013

This hotel was booked as part of tour package. This is priced and probably intended as a budget hotel. The review is focused on the basic rooms.

The hotel is in serious need of a make-over. It's just a really run down place. I am by no means a fussy traveller and I can accept a lot of things but if it's not clean it gets a poor rating (for me anyway). At this price point I would recommend to go elsewhere.

The beds are big and comfortable. But that doesn't excuse old chewing gum underneath the blanket and strands of hair on the sheets. The shower didn't drain properly and the bathroom got flooded. The rooms are carpeted which has stains and doesn't look very sanitary.

On the bright side the hotel has extremely helpful staff. When I asked for help with the shower, the reception lady gave me another room. This room has was in much better shape but the toilet didn't flush properly. So we switched to another room which didn't have a shower head holder (at this point I had a bright idea to use this to ask for an upgrade). I asked nicely for one of their exec rooms and she gave it to me for no extra charge. I think actually building a relationship with the reception lady while dealing with room issues helped. No-one likes a whiny and impatient/angry person. In the end we ended up with a pretty good room with no complaints.

The second time staying at the hotel on the return leg after going to Annapurna, our room had a filthy bathtub. But for 1 night, whatever... I'm not fussed. The rest of the room was bearable.

A big plus is the location though.

What a great location. Quiet and peaceful setting, yet not even 100 meters from the hustle and bustle of The Thamel district. Rooms overlook a lovely garden. The buffet breakfast is great (although not included in price like many other hotels) and the menu extensive. Staff were very helpful and attentive making for a relaxing stay. A great place to stay post trekking- we will stay again for sure.

A great location, simply the best staff in Kathmandu, however the rooms are now very tired and in desperate need of a makeover. Door handles keep falling off, there is also that third workld plumbing problem of sewer smells coming up the service cavity into the rooms. The garden is a welcome relief after a busy day in Kathmandu !

In Nepal, one must relate all ratings in relation to the price and the fact that Nepal is not Europe. Nirvana is really well located, has the basic services but lacks the finesse of a better hotel in Europe. The room was good, but as it lacks both heating and cooling, we had to ask for a separate heater, which they provided immediately.

The breakfast (included) is ok, but definitely not more.

I would say it's an ok two-star hotel with western standards. But with nepalese, it's good!

I really enjoyed my stay at Nirvana. Although on the pricey side (for Thamel) it was not unreasonable, and I would pay it again for the amazing breakfast, the lovely garden, and my own private balcony (overlooking said garden). Some of the staff were friendly, some not so much. My room was comfortable and clean, although the bathroom was a little on the shabby side (considering the room rate). Location was ideal – near everything you need, yet tucked in a corner away from the madness and street noise. Definitely a good post-trek option in my opinion.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the garden

We stayed here as part of a holiday package. The hotel is located in a quiet garden setting right in the heart of Thamel. It’s handy to shopping, restaurants and sightseeing. The garden is very pretty with flowering shrubs and a lovely waterfall. We stayed here on three different occasions during our trip and had three different rooms. All were quite spacious with comfortable beds. We did strike problems with leaky taps, odd hours with hot water and lights that didn’t work. We only ate breakfast here which was varied and tasty though on occasions was almost cold. The staff were very helpful, friendly and efficient. There is free Wifi but it isn’t reliable and computers are available for guests’ use but very slow. However, we would definitely stay here again as the hotel is good value for money and its location is excellent.

The hotel is situated in the old town area of Kathmandu (Thamel) colourful shops and outdoor clothing shops are on the door step.
The hotel has safety deposit boxes and a storage room where luggage can be left (free of charge) for a few days if you leave to trek or visit other areas.
Although some rooms are small and dingy, others are large and bright with balconies overlooking the garden (worth emailing to request one of these prior to arriving) Here you can sit on the balcony overlooking the very pretty gardens
The garden is a lovely place to sit and relax and have breakfast or a drink, a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle outside.
The staff are friendly and helpful and were particularly so when my friend and I stayed 3 days at the hotel following a group tour of Nepal.
They allowed us to make local phone calls free of charge and also called taxis for us ensuring we were not "ripped off" .
The hotel is good value for money, our stay for 2 of us for 3 nights inc breakfast only cost us£121.71 in a large balconied room.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore Kathmandu and is only a short walk from Durbar Square.(this was written on behalf of my Mum) age 71

Room Tip: Request a back room as they are quieter also ask for a large room with a balcony.
