Extremely social hostel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 18, 2016via mobile
This hostel is definitely the place to stay if you are looking to meet other backpackers in Kathmandu. I stayed a few other hostels prior to Alobar and was having a hard time meeting other travelers but once I went to Alobar I instantly met loads of travelers. The upstairs lounge is very relaxed and you may find yourself spending more time in the hostel than anticipated. The rooms aren't anything special, but it's very affordable. Hot showers are hard to come by and the wifi is incredibly unreliable so if you need wifi try to go elsewhere or wake up really early when no one is using it. The staff is also incredibly friendly and very helpful!

It is close to thamel within walking distance. The staff is very helpful. The atmosphere is that of a hostel and great to meet other travellers. The hot shower is always and issue but this is almost everywhere the same :-) just ask when there will be hot shower

I have such mixed feelings about this place. I arrived early in the morning after a night bus from Lumbini, absolutely dying to get into a proper bed. I had found in previous hostels that not booking for the night before you arrive if you are arriving in early hours, you often do not get a bed straight away as somebody has not yet checked out, so I made a point of booking a bed for the previous night. I arrived and was told I could not have the bed I booked as going into the dorms would wake people up (it was 7am at this point), after much pleading the staff at reception decided I would get a bed, except it seemed as though she was just checking in every room until she found a bed that looked free. My bed hadn't had the sheets changed since the last person slept in it, and although the member of staff assured me she was about to come up and change them, she never returned and I had to rest in dirty sheets. Finally when it was check in time, I decided I would forget everything and not hold a grudge. I went downstairs to check in and was told that as I had booked a bed for the night before, I would have to pay for it! I explained that had there actually been a bed reserved for me, I would be happy to pay for it but clearly nothing had been reserved despite my booking and I was not prepared to pay the price of a full night to sleep for an hour in a bed that still had the imprint of another person on it. Bathrooms were quite bad as well, doors looked like they were about to come off. Wifi was bad. This hostels saving grace was the very friendly bar staff, the delicious food and the overall great atmosphere in the upstairs common areas.

Located in the colorful and trendy Thamel district, Alobar 1000 is a great hangout for young backpackers. The rooftop bar, restaurant and lounge are excellent places to meet other travelers, and learn of where to go and what to see. The hotel staff, like most other locals, are super friendly and helpful. However, if you are a bit older and not used to sharing bunk beds in tiny rooms then you may wish to find a place slightly more upscale. The share bathrooms and toilets can also be a bit messy, as it is a large hostel and cleaning up after a lot of kids, many of whom are exploring the world for the first time, takes the staff a bit of time. All this said, if you can chill and get into the groove of the place, it can be a lot of fun!

If you are looking for a social hostel, well this one is the right one! It's a great place to meet cool people and chill out at the rooftop.
The hostel is ok, but not hot water and wifi is not the best, but anyway the vibe here is just amazing and you won't regret it!

Comfortable place as a backpacker, good socializing hub and great to find trekking partners. Love the ambiance! Cost of accommodation is not much. The bathrooms can be better but can't expect everything by paying $5!
