“Great Times in Old House”
Reviewed December 1, 2013 via mobile

The hotel is officially known as World Heritage Hotel & Apartments and the building is called "Dwarika Chhen".

The red brick building is very old and is highlighted with ornamental wooden windows and doors. The whole place has a very special charm to it.

You can enjoy your meals in the indoors, courtyard or on the rooftop terrace.

Rooms are pleasant and spacious...rooms 1 and 2 have kitchenettes and small wardrobes. Please note these rooms are next to the street so may become a bit noisy in the mornings as the city wakes up.

It's situated right on the cusp of Durbar (palace) square so it's easy to pop out of the hotel and enjoy the surroundings...which is a bit less touristy than the Thamel area.

The owner and manger, Sagar was amazing and catered to our very need...airport pick up, tours in the city, day trips, etc. It was like having a private tour agency in house.

He and his wife even gave us a special going-away ceremony complete with flower necklace, Nepalese hat and blessings.

Highest recommendation for an authentic stay in Kathmandu.

I love this place, full of charm and history, just around the spectacular Durbar square, so you can stroll around, absorb the holiness and magic in the air, then continue to your lovely room, equipped with all the modern necessities, yet bearing the character and glory of ancient times... The place is well maintained by Sagar & his family along with a very helpful staff. Sagar was full of information and hospitality and gave us insiders tips that added to our understanding of the culture and traditions. An unforgettable place... Kathmandu - I'll be back :)

Location is great! just in the Durbar Square. The hotel is not fancy and luxury but the staff makes it so comfortable, Sagar the owner has taken care of almost everything we need. Whatever you need, he can arrange for you in an easy way. Also the food is great there, ok you can try one night in thamel but for the rest no need to go thamel without any doubt you can have the traditional newari cuisine at the hotel. Sagar the owner also was better than any tourist guide... He can tell you anything you want to know about nepali culture :))

Dont hesitate to stay at this hotel... even if it is not fancy and luxury we have the comfort there...
just an advice for the hotel admisintration, please renew the bed clothings especially the blankets... They are really old.

The staff of the hotel are passionate about the heritage of Kathmandu. The location is basically IN Durbar square. Step off the busy noisy streets and into the peaceful courtyard leading to the hotel. (You must still expect some honking and dog barking, but it's minimal) We were given so much information about the area and assistance in organising our travel. The style of the hotel is traditional, beautiful, and finished to a high standard. We stayed in a top end room and a budget room, and both were good value for money. A really nice Newari family experience. Couldn't have asked for more.

If you want a true Newari experience-this is the place to head to! My stay at this beautiful Chhen made my trip to Nepal unforgettable. The owners are the most hospitable and patient people I have met and I was warmly welcomed into the family. The traditional Chhen is perfectly located-1 minute away from the stunning Durbar square and yet very easy and close to Thamel without being in that noisy and crowded area. The rooms are very spacious and well equipped. The hotel also provides excellent traditional food and tours to the Monkey temple as well as airport pick-up. It is really impossible not to fall in love with this place filled with kindness.
Thank you to the family!

Determined to find a decent hotel, away from the noise of Thamel, my wife and I settled on Dwarika's Chhen.

The location has its pros and cons. It is located in a much quieter area than Thamel. That said, I don't think anywhere in Kathmandu is likely to be that quiet so just bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Durbar Sq is no more than 10 metres away which means it is a great base to take tours from. Thamel and all the western restaurants are a ten minute walk away.

The hotel is really a series of great apartments - five, I think. The room was beautifully decorated, really stylish, large, clean, comfortable, was en suite and had a small kitchen area (sink, fridge, hob). If you intend to use the kitchen, be sure to enquire in advance as there was no gas supply in our room. WiFi really quick. Randomly had to request a tv but that was installed immediately.

The staff are very helpful. Overall a good place to stay if a little on the expensive side.
