“Great Hotel Excellent Staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

i have stayed at this hotel twice now, once in September 2012 for three weeks and May/June 2013 for five weeks. On each visit I was treated like Royalty and my every expectation was met. The staff and management were available 24/7 and attended to my every need or want. The management staff is top notch and the staff are friendly and professional.

For 16 years this has been my budget lodge of choice on Freak Street. An earlier review expressed disappointment and was dismayed by the unfriendly service and "new" owner. The owners are still around almost everyday and they are exactly the same owners of 16 years ago who take a keen interest in making this the best choice on Freak Street. You cannot find more friendly staff than here. The young men are always there and a joy to be around. My only disappointment with my present stay is the new "Thamel-type" restaurant built behind the hotel. While it adds some noise to the hotel until 9pm the hotel is still likely the quietest on Freak Street and free from the otherwise ever present motorcycle noise. Certainly it is quieter than Thamel guesthouses. I'll definitely return to this long time favourite.

This is one of the best budget options near Durbar Square, down an alleyway leading off Freak Street. The location is excellent, a minutes walk from the square and loads of restaurants and amenities, plus the area is relatively quiet compared to Thamel. It is cheap (at time of writing, high season - 400 Rupees for shared bathroom, 500 for private bathroom). Double and twin rooms are available (no price reduction for solo travellers). Communal bathrooms and rooms are clean. Matresses are quite hard but that's Nepal for you. Hot showers although earlier in the morning they can be lukewarm. There is an emergency generator for the Nepal load sharing (power cuts), and most rooms have 2 power sockets. Security seems good, you can padlock your door and windows are barred. The main gate is closed at 11pm. There is no wi-fi but across the road is a very cheap internet cafe and Jessy Penny's bar/cafe has fast wi-fi down the street. The attached restaurant with a nice ground floor terrace serves tasty, cheap food open from 8:30am - 9pm. Staff at the hotel and restaurant are young, friendly and helpful although service/food can be slow especially in the restaurant. A laundry service and bag storage service is available. The end rooms have a little balcony, and the walkways catch the daytime sun. Be warned that the restaurant is cold in the morning in the autumn/winter as its in shadow. After 10pm the place is fairly quiet aside from the usual barking dogs in the area and from 7am you can hear the odd bit of noisy motorbikes and people. Earplugs are recommended if you don't follow these hours for sleeping!

I've spoken to other long-term travellers who say that this is probably the best budget place outside of Thamel. After staying for over a week I am inclined to agree - check it out..

Room Tip: The double rooms at the end of the corridors have an attached bathroom and small balcony - that'...

Right in the center of Kathmandu, in the atmospheric freak street - you couldn't ask for a better location in Kathmandu. There is plenty of hot water, and showers and toilets are clean. Rooms are great value - some are very clean and nice, some are less so. Too bad they allow smoking in them- the room we stayed in the second tome was rather smokey.

I've been using this place for years and have met a fair few others who always return. Sadly its recently been taken over by a new owner and is not the place it once was. Gone are the friendly staff (except in the restaurant) and I even spent ten minutes waiting at reception whilst the two guys working on it finished their chat, as I'd still got a rucksack on it was obvious I wasn't wanting just a small enquiry but checking in. The old friendliness has gone and this is now like many of the other hotels in Katmandu, simply average. So i tried a few others this trip and settled on the Tibet Peace Guest House, which although its not as friendly as the old Annapurna is at least good value.

Room Tip: As with all hotels in Katmandu it can change, just keep out of the main areas of Thamel.
