Take your time to walk around and get the feeling of the place. I can highly recommend to hire a guide for a few hours since there is many things happening in the temple area.

We visited the temple in Kathmandu prior to departing for our Khumbu trek in May 2013. I had read about it before coming and was very curious to see what it was all about. Most interesting was the religious cremations of Hindu loved ones through the complex. 24 hours after death, those being laid to rest are brought here and placed upon concrete tiers lined next to a small river which is supposedly sacred to all Hindus. After a brief ceremony the dead are cremated on the tiers in public with their ashes being spread amongst the river. Incredibly serene and interesting, this temple was probably my favorite side trip while in the city. The architecture of the complex is also very good and the sight/smells are unmatched. Beware of the entrance as their are many oxen and cattle roaming freely as well as vendors haggling for a sale. Once you enter take in the sights but if you want to take pics I recommend walking to the back of the complex and up the hill overlooking the temple as there are many others doing the same and it is more respectful. There are also a few asthetics within the complex willing to do a photo op for less than $2 USD if you're interested. It will cost you $1000 rupees o get in or about $10 USD. Check out my pics and enjoy!

It shows the real life and that life goes on. Very sereen atmosphere. Impressive to be part of a very private occasion. It brings death near to life in the most positive way.

Be sure and get one of the locals as a guide. I used a 1-armed man of about 40 that was fantastic. This site is extremely large with a lot of walking to do but well worth it. Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to go up and down. Bring water with you that you know is clean. So much to see so be sure to set aside several hours. Well worth the visit.
