Shangri-La Hotel Kathmandu
Ranked #95 of 207 Hotels in Kathmandu
Reviewed March 18, 2014

Generally speaking, I either love a hotel or dislike it. This hotel inspired mixed feelings as there were some aspects of it which were particularly impressive whilst others were disappointing. Reservations and front desk staff were particularly courteous and I found them very helpful. The general interior of the hotel is good as is the lounge and bar area on the ground floor. The bedrooms are comfortable although not altogether spacious. They can get very stuffy at times and I found that the handle had been removed from the window so I couldn't open it without calling for assistance.

The garden at the hotel is a particular attraction and the breakfast served out there is of a good quality although I rather got the impression that the staff, generally speaking, were not particularly interested in their guests and would rather talk amongst themselves than be attentive. The other disappointing aspect to outside is that there looks to be a particularly nice swimming pool but it was out of service during the entirety of my stay. This was most unfortunate as one of the reasons I selected the hotel in the first place was because of the pool.

The spa at the hotel is one of the positives- very professional service and worth visiting (whether you are a guest at the hotel or not).

If the service at breakfast improved and the pool was operational, I might be minded to return to this hotel. Otherwise, I would not.

Dear Mr. Grout,
Greetings from Shangrila~La Hotel, Kathmandu!
Thank you for choosing to stay at The Shangri~La Hotel during your recent visit to Kathmandu, Nepal !
We are very grateful for your recognition towards our effort in providing quality service and facility. Your comments will be shared with our entire team which will encourage them to further strive towards achieving excellence.
As regards your comment on swimming pool, since the swimming pool is out door and is unusable during winter season and remains closed for repairs, from October till 14th of March every year. Windows in the rooms are kept closed for effective heating /air conditioning, to prevent insects coming in and also for guest security purpose. However, we do have provision to open it only by the Housekeeping department on guest request. We have noted your comments on staff in the restaurant which have been addressed with the concerned department and will also incorporate it in our in-house training.
The team at the hotel looks forward to welcome you back and assure you of another memorable stay and dining experience.
Thank you for taking the time to share the review here on Trip Advisor.

Very good service - difficult to fault the staff. The hotel is fine by Kathmandu standards but isn't part of the global Shangri-la chain and doesn't aspire to that level of luxury. Food was good, even with a number of tourist groups coming and going.

I stayed five nights in February and enjoyed good and very friendly service and to relax in the nice garden away from the noise and dust of the city .The hotel was fully booked but the reception staff memorized my room number, and I felt like a general when being saluted by the doormen every time I left the hotel. The garden restaurant was good, and it was nice to enjoy all meals outside. Just bring a warm cardigan. Very positive that transport from and to the airport is included.in the prize.

Room Tip: Fourth floor is the newest, but the lift broke down often. Rooms facing the garden have the best vie...

Booked thru JetEscapes Holidays. Ed Hillary's autographed picture on the 4th floor.
1. Great Breakfast added in room charges
2. Good helpful Reception, Cashiers. Can't say the same for other staff.
3. Great Saluting security. I felt awkward after each salute. Good people.
4. Good cultural program with Nepali Thali. Very short. Commentary, compering could have been better.
5. Solo singer - horribly expensive dinner.
6. Free WIFI in Coffee shop, bar.
7. Nice garden, well maintained.
8. Extremely old and poorly maintained rooms. Funny to hear about upgrading to Deluxe when we booked Deluxe room. No or very poor heating in Near Zero degree temperature.
9. You are made to follow hotel cult of drinking herbal tea or order normal Tea coffee at NPR 250 from Room service. Terrible.
10. Very high tips expectation by housekeeping/ room service staff and concierge. Or you are met with a frown and some funny words in nepali under the breath.

Jet Escapes should look at better hotels on Darbar Palace road and should do away with their custom to this hotel.

Room Tip: Take a room on higher floor closer to the lift.

Our first night in Nepal before flying to Lukla en route for a trek to Everest base camp. The hotel gave our group a very warm welcome, it was very clean throughout, dining rooms excellent with good choice of food, staff helpful and even went out of their way to provide a few odds and ends that we required e.g. a set of scales to weigh our luggage. Bedrooms comfortable. Also stayed on the return journey and found found exactly the same standard of care. We were even able to leave luggage there for a couple of weeks. They also have a small pool area which allowed us the opportunity to fully relax.

Room Tip: They have a beauty section so try this, especially on return journey, for a facial or full body mass...

I stayed in this hotel before heading out on a trekking trip. Rooms are clean, 20 minute walk to Thamil, free wifi in common areas, great breakfast. The street it is on is a mess, they were digging it up and there was dust everywhere, but once in the gates it was a comfortable hotel. There isa spa on site and a small swimming pool. Coffee shop and pastries and an ATM.
