We got to Kathmandu from Tibet write at the transition point from the low-season to the high-season. We arrived at the border, bartered to get a mini-bus for our party and a small group of Greeks who were also looking to get to Kathmandu, and then chose to get dropped off at this hotel because of its location.
Originally we were thinking of just using the Shangri-la as a base point from which we could explore other hotels. I think that the manager might have realized this as well because after a bit of hard negotiating, we ended up getting our rooms for less than half of what we were quoted at the desk (with breakfast) - on the condition that we only stayed for 3 nights, since with the high season coming they had a large group coming in on the 4th.
This worked out wonderfully for us! Great location. Perfectly acceptable rooms. Scenic, quiet garden area. Small aesthetically pleasing swimming pool. Very basic gym, but it was acceptable for our needs. Good breakfast. Great service. Our only complaint was that they tried to charge for use of their small, basic sauna (which is just a little wooden room next to the swimming pool) - it was disappointing that we weren't able to get them to waive the entry fee - especially since it was already heated up and there was no one in it!!More
