“Architectural Gem - Oasis”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

Unbelievably calm and relaxing oasis in the center of a bustling/crazy city! The reclaimed architectural elements used to build the hotel are incredible! Gorgeous, thoughtful, and a testament to the forward thinking/conservationist Das Dwarika... The food was delicious, but the breakfast was not terribly interesting. The cocktails on the patio and in the bar were lovely. The hotel is not on the same scale of luxury as the Leela Palace in Delhi or the Oberoi in Agra, but for Kathmandu, it is a great choice. Definitely use the guides suggested by the hotel. The guide service was started by Dwarika and our guide was outstanding. Kathmandu is fascinating.

Room Tip: We were in a very large room in the main building, but I think some of the other buildings are newer...

I've stayed in a number of Kathmandu hotels and have been to Dwarika's but this is the first stay. It sets a high standard of service and in my view is without equal as a heritage hotel anywhere in the world. The building is stunning and the rooms very well done. The favorite part for me is sitting in the outdoor courtyard with breakfast or dinner and this raises the only quibble I have - please turn off the outdoor music. With the trees and beautiful architecture sitting outdoors is a joy but the loud outdoor music spoils it. I'd much rather listen to the many birds and enjoy some of the peaceful time this hotel offers. Otherwise, this property is wonderful.

Not the best hotel I have ever stayed in nor the most glamourous let alone the most oppulent yet this may stand as one of the most unique hotels I have ever visited - a shrine to the vision of one man Das Dwarika and also to Newari archetectual design. Lovely rooms over looking a courtyard of calmness and tranquility. Restaurants are as good as any and the staff add to the special feeling.

Fabulous hotel.Beautiful courtyard Service is wonderful. Rooms are clean and very spacious. The love that has gone into building and rebuilding this using local Newari woodwork is evident all over the hotel and in the rooms. Bed very comfortable. Bathrooms enormous and well equipped.Try the Nepalese restaurant. Exceptional food. You chose a number of courses and sit on very low chairs, really romantic and fun. The Tocan restaurant also was very good as was the breakfast. If you want to explore the city we found the staff very helpful in sorting out local taxis and explaining what we wanted although more expensive than getting one out in the city. This is certainly expensive but a real treat and one worth the money if you have it.
NOTE the adverts say they take AMEX but we were told they cannot get authorisation for this so in fact not accurate. Bring another credit card

Not even mentioning the restored architecture and other features, once you step pass the saluting guard at the door, and you see the tranquil garden/lobby area, you know that the dust, noise, atmospheric pollution are behind you. Service is seriously professional without being obsequious. While every item cost an amount way beyond the average wage of the workers there, you never get any sense of resentment. They are just happy to be of service. I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a junior executive suite for the first night and it was splendid. One perennial beef I have is that a luxury hotel in this day and age that can charge hundreds of $$ a night should not nickel and dime you out of free wi-fi. That attitude is so passe and likely to invoke resentment from your well heeled guests than almost anything else.
Great buffet breakfast with a skilled "egg station". Dinner at Toran was reasonable but not anything special. Krishnarpan already reviewed separately. Did not try the Mako Japanese restaurant.

Room Tip: try and get upgraded to a suite with a large patio! you'll think that you were royalty

I just love this hotel! It is called Dwarika's because it is the life's work of one man, his courageous wife and their offspring. This hotel is a celebration of Newari architecture and Nepalese culture. Great service, comfortable rooms and incomparable ambiance!

Room Tip: You must enjoy evening dinner at Dwarika's. You will never forget it!

It is always a disappointment to travel to Kathmandu and not get a room at Dwarika's.

Staff are incredibly courteous and the hotel is architecturally so appealing it is an effort to leave the hotel compound (and with several excellent restaurants there is not exactly a pressing need).

The new gym is a welcome addition.
