The KGH has two big elements in its favour: location and atmosphere. It doesn't matter that rooms can be rustic and shabby. The KGH for many comes to signify the eve of a big adventure in the mountains. And that's its magic. That and the fact the Beatles stayed there in '68. That they've added the name The Beetles to the courtyard walk of fame just added to its cooky charm.
Go, expect little, and you'll get a lot in return. And of course, don't forget to trek.

The hotel has good overall ambience, with places to relax during the day. Clean and good room interiors. Although, breakfast is repetitive and needs some variation. Staff is very polite and helpful. Worth for the money.

Room Tip: Nice clean rooms. Breakfast needs variation. overall good place to stay.

We traveled on business with two other colleagues in May Stayed here because it was well rated and close to the office where we worked in the day. Must say that I was blown away by the setting - especially the inner courtyard - and the service at the restaurant and the rooms as well. The rating would have been a five but for the fact that the wifi was disappointingly slow - though at times speed was better. Best near the lobby and the inner courtyard, In addition the bathroom amenities could be a bit better - but all in all I was very happy with the place and would stay here again if needed.

Room Tip: I got a larger room - but they all seem to only have twin (single) beds.

This is an ideal place to stay in the heart of touristy Thamel. Everyone knows it. Next to some pubs so can be loud at night.

You can get rooms from $2 - 100. Ask to see a few rooms because, even within a price range, they vary wildly.

Friendly, helpful staff. (Though, sometimes a bit too friendly so it feels a bit full on.)

Free wif!

Just incredible! Warm welcome, cosy and friendly staff! Room with electricity were great, clean and comfortable. The gardens are beautiful and well kept! Stayed at The Shanker (4*local hotel) for the last night of our holiday and all we wanted to do was go back to KGH ;) Definitely return!

Room Tip: Choose rooms with 24 hours electricity as it apparently goes off twice a day...

Rooms in the new wing were fantastic and reasonably priced. A/C worked well in the heat of May. Staff was welcoming at all times and helpful with day trip planning and transportation. Would absolutely stay there again.

I travel a lot for work, and whenever I am in Kathmandu, which is about 3 times per year, I stay at the Kathmandu Guest House.

The people who work there are kind, accomodating, and friendly. They are alsway willing to find you a better room, and will ensure that you get what you need. My work colleague has difficulty walking, and even though the hotel was almost full, they managed to move reservations around to make sure that she could be on the ground floor and therefore did not need to walk up stairs.

They people working there are also very knowledgeable and attuned to their clients' needs. I got sick on my last trip and the manager knew exactly what to do and where to send me for help.

On top of all this, the hotel has a wonderful dinning area in the front of the hotel, which is removed from the street, where you can dine to the accompaniment of trasitional Nepali music. And if you dont feel like this, then there is a large courtyard in back, filled with well-cared plants and trees, where you can sit back and forget the city for a spell.

The Kathmandu guest house is a true gem!
