“greatest hotel experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2014

I travel a lot for work, and whenever I am in Kathmandu, which is about 3 times per year, I stay at the Kathmandu Guest House.

The people who work there are kind, accomodating, and friendly. They are alsway willing to find you a better room, and will ensure that you get what you need. My work colleague has difficulty walking, and even though the hotel was almost full, they managed to move reservations around to make sure that she could be on the ground floor and therefore did not need to walk up stairs.

They people working there are also very knowledgeable and attuned to their clients' needs. I got sick on my last trip and the manager knew exactly what to do and where to send me for help.

On top of all this, the hotel has a wonderful dinning area in the front of the hotel, which is removed from the street, where you can dine to the accompaniment of trasitional Nepali music. And if you dont feel like this, then there is a large courtyard in back, filled with well-cared plants and trees, where you can sit back and forget the city for a spell.

The Kathmandu guest house is a true gem!

A number of people recommended this place - and upon mentioning it to locals, they seem rest assured that the KGH is one of the best places to stay while in Kathmandu. Hmmm...While the rooms are OK, you definitely won't be see them featured in Vogue Travel or Conde Nast Traveller any time soon. My room, in the older section, had a ceiling fan that mysteriously turned itself off after an hour of use. When I mentioned this to reception, they casually informed me that it was just part of the daily power outage which would last a number of hours. Be aware of this if you're planning on charging up your cameras or phones. The outage also meant showering in the dark as the bathroom is internal. As the shower and toilet are in close proximity, expect everything to get wet when showering - toilet, toilet paper......

My second room after coming back from a trek was in a quieter area - at my request. The view was of a brick cul de sac with a few pigeons cooing on the eaves. By early evening, the population of the 'rats of the sky' had grown - along with their noise and crap. I had to change rooms. Initially I was told there were no garden view rooms available but when I insisted, miraculously, there was one at $10 more per night.

Breakfast in the courtyard is sufficient and free wi fi throughout the guest house is adequate. The masseur is very good. Friendly and great for a post trek treatment. There is a free water cooler just off the garden and many people take advantage of this before setting out by filling up drink bottles. Reception staff are friendly. Would I stay again? Well the location is excellent - set in a little off the bustling street but I'd look elsewhere first. I did get a good discount as it was off season but you do get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Ask if your room is in the new or old section. I believe the new section is much nicer and may be wo...

I'm very saddened by my recent stay. This was supposed to be a time of relaxing and rejuvenating. I made reservations fairly far in advance, double checking on my reservation and was told it was all confirmed. But come check in, my room wasn't available. In fact, after two days it still wasn't available. I was so looking forward to a bathtub. There were other places I could have made reservations at, but because I've been staying at the KTM Guesthouse since 2003, that was where I had my heart set on staying.

But you know something...the last two times I visited, they did the same thing. In fact, one time they moved me and my two friends to another hotel for a night. It is ridiculously unfair that they treat people like this, double booking and force people to go somewhere else.

I am not sure that I will stay there the next time I'm in town, nor would I recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Just be careful of the small garden view room, on the ground floor - it smelled like urine.

We stayed before and after an Everest Base Camp Trek. It is in a great location in Thamel and has private entrance with security and a cash machine (from Standard Chartered Bank, complete with guard but sadly not working). The breakfast buffet is good value at about $6 and is very filling after days of Dhal Baat. The rooms are a bit basic but the beds were OK and the showers were hot. The plug circuits went off every day so charging things was tricky but they were on early and late. The gardens at the back are beautiful and a lovely tranquil place away from the madness of Thamel. The staff were all really friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our stay there. There is a spa and we had foot massages for an hour was £10 and really relaxing.

Room Tip: There are so many rooms but some are more basic so if you think you have one of these then ask to ch...

The hotel certainly has some character. But their cheaper rooms in the old wing leave a lot to be desired. The (separate) toilets are not clean and the showers have no mirrors. Rooms are just so..so. I stayed in 2 of the rooms and both had broken fans. Plenty of better value nearby.

But that's not the worst. All the doors of the rooms on the left side of the old wing (of at least the first floor) have pretty wide vertical slits in them. I saw a waiter peeping through a slit into a room where I knew a couple of girls were staying! Ladies have been warned.

Dear Guest,
You stayed in one of our budget rooms. You get what what you pay for. What can you expect when you are paying such a budget price? We have these rooms for backpackers who are on a limited budget and they are very grateful that such rooms are available in a hotel like ours.
About the peeping from one of our waiters...this is a very serious allegation. Our waiters are well trained and have the highest respect for guests. We trust our staff and please do not write something so demeaning like this unless you have proof.

regards

You must stay here at least once . It has so much history now celebrating 50 years. Although it has been extended none of the ambiance or charm has been lost . The central area is so special and is ideal to interact or just chill out . It is well run and quite reasonably priced for the standards it sets .
Worth getting deal including the buffet breakfast which is in an attractive area near the entrance . To buy the breakfast seperately is relatively expensive especially compared to delicous bakery ites availabke next door .
Wifi is free and works in the rooms although as everywhere electricity supply relies on generator much of the time .
Rooms clean and well appointed and the staff excellent
What is so special is that it is in the very heart of bustling Thamel but is like an oasis . you pass through gates and are saluted by the lovely smiling uniformed guard .

An ideal base in Kathmandu

Room Tip: rate including breakfast good value
